Walking times between stages

Very good work slim!

I think that around 0.75m/s would be more realistic for a festival -- when you've got people to dodge you tend to go a lot slower than normal.

I've just measured the Pyramid to Other distance and got around 700m so there's obviously a bit of interpretation when it comes to tracing a route. I calculated a Pyramid to Other time of around 16 min, which, when compared to your figure of 4:30, suggests that there's a bit of refining still to do.

OK, I tried measuring the routes I would take using the ruler in Glasto Earth.

The distances are in metres, and the times are in decimal minutes assuming 2 metres/second walking pace.

Of course you'll have to add bimbling time, exhaustion time, crowd nuisance time, etc.

It's all colourful in Excel. I'll put a screenshot in another post.

How long is a piece of string?

There is not definitive answer to times between stages.

It depends on loads of things including

Who is playing what stage, when and how popular are they? (This can result in major jams with you moving nowhere fast for ages)

Whats your starting position in the area you are in in relation to the direction you are going? eg Are you in the crowd up the front of the Pyramid looking to go to the Other, or are you at the back to the left as you face the stage going to the Other? Massive difference in results!

Do you need to cross any main stage areas when really busy? eg cutting across the Other Stage area mid gig to get to the Dance Village, or Crossing the Pyramid Field mid gig to get to the John Peel? It will have a major impact on speeds........

What are the ground conditions like? If you get 2007 type mud it takes a year to put one foot in front of the other.

Who are you with and how many of you? On your own you will obviously travel faster, but with a big crowd trying to stay together can slow you down hugely, especially when people are hungry, thirsty and need to go top the toilet...........

How good of a navigator are you? Can you assess crowds ahead of you and change directions appropriately so as to choose the right paths to keep you moving? This is an inate talent lacking in many.

Are you familiar with the lay of the land? Many people not actually can get lost and go way out of their way

How drunk are you?

How tired are you?

Are your feet sore from days of walking?

Are you on drugs? (You may never get to where you want sometimes in this state!)

etc etc etc

You would need an advace mathamatical model really to help you get a true answer and still it may be way out!

It Glasto..........go with the flow, dont stress, see what happens and have a good time! :P

One thing that first timers might not appreciate is when looking at the line up, you might think 'well these lot finish at 3pm on the pyramid, and this lot start at 2.45 on the other stage so I'll only miss a bit of their set'.

You won't, because just 'hopping' between stages takes a lot more time than you'd think (unless it's something like The Queen's Head to the Acoustic Stage).

If you've got such a clash between West Holts and the John Peel, forget it!!

15-25 mins anywhere to anywhere if you dont bimble and dont look at anything

20-40 mins if you bimble a bit drunkenly

45+ mins for a little bimblette experience

60+ mins for the full on bimble

plus cider, spliff and chems - add 30 mins at least!

plus mud - add 30 mins and more drugs

use the least congested routes - a roundabout route is often quicker than direct

:P

Or indeed, between the Other Stage and the Pyramid. They seem close together, but when you've got 2000 people trying to make the same walk at exactly the same moment, and another 2000 coming the other way, it takes quite a lot longer.

loving the effort going into calculating times on this thread.

I would say that wihtou significant crowds it is 5 mins between Pyramid, Other and West Holts.

Add 5 for getting to John Peel form any of them (except if to the right side of the Pyramid arena) and add another 10 if trying to find any of the others. it is 15 minutes fast walk to the park from Other to the Park.

But it really does depend on crowds. These times will suit for most of the day but as crowds get more concentrated later on you are looking at 20 minutes between the 4 main stages at peak movement times. And of course none of this takes a not so sober state of mind into account.

I would say the grid calculated aboove is fairly spot on. assumigg sobriety and light people density.

Another thing to remember is that bicycles are welcome on site so you can reduce these times during the quieter daytime periods if you take one. At night when the headlines are on though, a bike a more of a hindrance than anything.

I would juts say that all the planning in the world won't really help as the variables are huge:

weather

crowd

distractions

delays

toilet stops

to name a few.

I pretty much decided last year after about half a day that all my plans were a waste of time. Pick half a dozen must sees, wing the rest is my advice. Rushing between stages to see this that and everything would detract from your enjoyment of the place.

it'll take me ages to get anywhere. i'll just be stopping to look at EVERYHTING going.. "wow" and i'll probably go to the toilet about 5 times and go to the bar on my way from one place to another.. and stop to buy random crap. i'm not going to try and rush anywhere though. i just want to see things. :P

Yes crowding and bottlenecks could add 10-15 minutes on;

Example getting in / out of the Jazz stage just before Rolf last year - one line in and same out , we we squashed against fence couldn't see anything so left and come up against traffic in the other direction

Last year I went for a walk at 9am one day, went from other stage to JP to Pyramid to Queen Head to Cabaret to Jazz World and back to Other, took me just over an hour

Later that night it took me over 20 mins to walk from other to the pyramid
