Walking times between stages

Trying to get an idea of walking time between stages, to help fathom out the best itinerary - working in league with the trusty Clashfinder :P

Completely ignoring bottlenecks (a la Travis Pyramid 2000), munchie diversions & random sideshows along the way - what do you reckon is the the shanks' pony timescale for the following?

You'll need two lists.

Sober walking time and f**ked off your face walking time.

They are very, very different.

And also - crowds.

It'll take 4 times as long to get between the 2 main stages before/after a headline act than it will wandering around the site on the Wednesday/Thursday.

Trust me. I'm a scheduler by profession.

15-25 mins anywhere to anywhere if you dont bimble and dont look at anything

20-40 mins if you bimble a bit drunkenly

45+ mins for a little bimblette experience

60+ mins for the full on bimble

plus cider, spliff and chems - add 30 mins at least!

plus mud - add 30 mins and more drugs

use the least congested routes - a roundabout route is often quicker than direct

:P

:P I agreed to nothing, show me where I signed up to that.

In which case lets go with a previous suggestion of mine of installing Futurama style transportation tubes everywhere

I hate to be the one to post a serious reply but it would be possible to measure the distances using Glasto Earth, wouldn't it?

You could then get the walking times by estimating walking speed at around 2mph, say?

It really does depend on conditions. At the end of a set on the pyramid stage on an evening it can take upwards of 15 mins just to get out of the crowd. The crowds after blur last year were so big it took us over an hour to reach the park. And in the mud of 07 it took forever to get anywhere.

Contrast that to wed/thu when in decent weather you can tour the entire festival in a few hours.

How long is a piece of string?

There is not definitive answer to times between stages.

It depends on loads of things including

Who is playing what stage, when and how popular are they? (This can result in major jams with you moving nowhere fast for ages)

Whats your starting position in the area you are in in relation to the direction you are going? eg Are you in the crowd up the front of the Pyramid looking to go to the Other, or are you at the back to the left as you face the stage going to the Other? Massive difference in results!

Do you need to cross any main stage areas when really busy? eg cutting across the Other Stage area mid gig to get to the Dance Village, or Crossing the Pyramid Field mid gig to get to the John Peel? It will have a major impact on speeds........

What are the ground conditions like? If you get 2007 type mud it takes a year to put one foot in front of the other.

Who are you with and how many of you? On your own you will obviously travel faster, but with a big crowd trying to stay together can slow you down hugely, especially when people are hungry, thirsty and need to go top the toilet...........

How good of a navigator are you? Can you assess crowds ahead of you and change directions appropriately so as to choose the right paths to keep you moving? This is an inate talent lacking in many.

Are you familiar with the lay of the land? Many people not actually can get lost and go way out of their way

How drunk are you?

How tired are you?

Are your feet sore from days of walking?

Are you on drugs? (You may never get to where you want sometimes in this state!)

etc etc etc

You would need an advace mathamatical model really to help you get a true answer and still it may be way out!

It Glasto..........go with the flow, dont stress, see what happens and have a good time! :P

OK, I tried measuring the routes I would take using the ruler in Glasto Earth.

The distances are in metres, and the times are in decimal minutes assuming 2 metres/second walking pace.

Of course you'll have to add bimbling time, exhaustion time, crowd nuisance time, etc.

It's all colourful in Excel. I'll put a screenshot in another post.
