There's a good deal of sense in that, although I would say that "discourage" won't be an objective. They are, after all, doing this to get traffic off the roads.

45,000 cars turned up on the Wednesday last year. If only a few thousand are displaced into the early arrival slot, the same traffic problems could occur.

I agree that 'discourage' won't be too high an objective, but similarly they won't want to encourage too many to arrive thru the night otherwise all the same problems will occur just at a different time. Making a charge for a pass along with the small hassle of sorting the pass will be enough to stop the same number turning up in that different time slot.

As for what happened last year, it wasn't just the numbers turning up that caused the problems but the time those people turned up - there was over ten miles of queue on the road out to Glastonbury and beyond before the car park gates opened, and that queue stayed around that size (with some variation) for the whole day.

If there'd not been that queue before the car parks opened and those vehicles that were queuing are removed from the equation then there wouldn't have been queues anything like what there was - simply ensuring it doesn't all start with a queue as it did last year will by itself make a massive amount of difference to how traffic flows around the whole area.

So I reckon it's a no-brainer for them to issue "early parking passes" (for a small charge and which won't be issued on the gate if someone arrives without one - no pass, no entry), which:-

My thoughts are that there will be a large number of people turn up in the hope of getting that special spot, they'll get arsehole drunk on cans of wifebeater, the bouncers (stewards my ample behind) will agitate the drunks by being overly aggressive when telling them to turn down their car stereos which are by now collectively pumping out 180 db of garbled noise that can be heard as far away as Yeovil, fights will break out, petrol tanks will be set on fire, toilets turned over, wimmin and children screaming, policemens helmets stolen, disaster say I.

It will be like Woodstock 99.

Plus the traffic jam will have started around midnight too.

Neil, I am not having a pop at this idea for the sake of it - I am usually one of the organisers biggest defenders. I just forsee problems with this one idea. You obviously support it and that is fair enough but you seem to be defending it a bit over-zealously and acting like there aren't idiots and arseholes or that historically these people have been kept in line by other festival goers, the stewards and the police. I beg to differ that's all.

The only thing in my list that I am likely to be any way responsible for is the first (partying on arrival). I shall crack open a few tins, light a few Js, turn on the music and laugh my arse off. I think a lot of other people will arrive early and do the same and this is collectively going to make some noise that's all.

Think the "early entry" pass would be a good idea, if there's a decent amount available but not unlimited it would spread the traffic over a longer period which has to be a good thing (doubt I cope with another 10 hour journey)

I'll happily roll up Wednesday morning, few small queues in the surrounding roads, perhaps walk a little further to camp or camp where I have to walk a little further to the stages.

Sure, there are negative ways to look at it too but I'm all for what's been mooted at the moment

Yeh she was and she kept on going on about "Her Blakey" for 10 minutes and you could tell the band were trying so hard to keep it all together, they were really tight but Winehouse was just ruined that evening. It was a shame.

There will be a high number of people who want to be there and camped for when England are on. But there will also be a lot of people who watch England at home and then come after as don't want to risk missing it because the are stuck in a queue.

One thing is almost certain - around the time of the game, inbound traffic will reduce massively. Ideal time to arrive for those who genuinely don't want to watch the match.
