I think another point to add is the cost of putting the show on.

With their large entourage and having to travel half way across the world they will definitely be making a huge loss on the gig.

It therefore makes it less likely that they will play. However, I remember reading that Paul McCartney made a loss on his gig so maybe they are willing to do that.

I would be delighted if it's true but as it's the Scum that's reporting it I have my doubts.

Don't think it would be a problem getting across the pond to play one special gig and as others say, they don't need the 360 stage.

Bare set on the pyramid and a massive chunk of old stuff and it's the kinda set that dreams are made of.

IMO

It all sounds good to me.A group the size of U2 would see this as an opportunity to get noticed on what is the biggest festival stage in the world on their 40th anniversary......an event that will make all the newspapers across the globe. Money does not come in to the mix when you are talking egos. I look forward to seeing them and having a right good singalong. :P

Just read the article and it's written in a very definitive way as if the writer is 100% sure the facts are correct.

Would Glasto confirm if this is true ??

Think they did when the correct headliners were rumoured about this time last year.

I'm getting tempted to believe this is true, but my inner sole tells me to never believe feck all that's tarted up as a scum exclusive :P Confused

I don't think cost would be an issue - U2 make plenty of money on tour to support one show making a loss. Plus they are quite media savvy and the publicity from performing at Glasto would be worth it.

As pointed out, instruments wouldn't be a problem, as moving a few guitars with the band is easy. they would probably hire out some video walls to go behind them and use the graphics form the current tour.

I think the biggest problems with this rumour is (1) whether the band want to fly back and forth across the Atlantic for one show - even with private jets it's still pretty draining to do, and (2) it's the Sun doing the reporting - they're very good at throwing out random stores they made up down the pub the night before...

.lets av the stones next!!

I'm thinking that if U2 are really playing on the Friday night then it can't be anyone but the Stones on Saturday night - they're about the only band I can think of that U2 would play second fiddle to (and headlining the Friday night is defo playing second fiddle).

But Eavis was recently quoted as saying an act they have is bigger than the Stones, so it sounds like it's not the Stones.

So that makes me think that this story isn't right, cos I can't see why U2 would play second fiddle to any other band. The only thing that could explain it is simply the fact that they couldn't play the Saturday because of the USA shows ..... but as the show that stops them playing the Saturday has only just been announced, surely they'd have not arranged that if they were playing Glasto?

It doesn't seem to add up to me. But maybe I'm speculating just a little too much around the other aspects.

My info this morning from someone that knows the writer (Gordon Smart) is that he's likely to believe what he's published as being true (that doesn't mean it is tho).

Glasto won't confirm it or deny it - eFestivals has been there before too often to know not to even bother giving them a call.

It was a long time after eFestivals announced who the 2009 headliners were that Glastonbury confirmed them, so don't expect any imminent official confirmation.

Any reason you can think of Neil why u2's pr men would feed him duff information?

But that's based on the assumption that the story has come from U2's PR people - it might not have.

Anyway, it's quite possible it's been made up by their PR people (tho as far as I know they don't have a reputation for making stuff up) - after all, it's good PR for U2 even if it's not true, and PR people are paid to get bands good PR.

while £250 is a lot less than the million or so acts get at other festivals, if they can't break even on that, something's wrong

I don't get how the logistics of doing 3 shows in 5 days is in any way problematic... :P

No one's saying that it's not possible.

But flying twice across the atlantic in a few days isn't the sort of thing most people would choose to do if they had a choice about it, and U2 will have had a choice about it. Spending that much time in a plane over a few days isn't exactly fun, and can be quite draining before even considering the jetlag possibilities (tho I realise that can in theory be avoided).
