So Starmer has said two worrying things this morning...

Firstly, that Labour policy on immigration barely differs from Tories.

Secondly, that he supports longer jail time for protestors, and specifically calls out Just Stop Oil.

Now... I fully sympathise with the requirement for a level of pragmatism and need to appeal to the electorate, but this is worse than keeping quiet.

Oh, you're right, I *don't* need to live in this shit hole to still get my daily fix...hmmm, but then I'd suffer the same fate as mattiloy in that ozanne would tell me I have no right to a UK political opinion anymore because I don't live in the country...swings and roundabouts...

Kinda what happens when you keep chasing the centre ground after 12 years of tory rule that has pulled the centre ground a smidgen to the left of right wing policies that used to only be the preserve of the National Front.

I guess labour feel they have to double down on this sort of stuff to stand a chance of winning.

I think immigration could be about to become an issue for the govt...apparently it was one of the big things that Truss and Braverman fell out over....Truss wanted to look at increasing immigration to help with growth, Braverman wanting to bring immigrations numbers down for political reasons(?). I assume Labour would have same conflicts.

I don't mind chasing the centre ground as long as you don't let the Tories define it by shifting the Overton window, and labour make an effort to shift ut back

A second Johnson premiership would have been a godsend to labour. In all likelihood it would have have imploded and caused a general election within 6 months. With sunak I reckon he'll be able to nurse the tories through till the full term. What concerns me about the conflicts you refer to, and the Mogg/Dorries nutters is that they'll agitate with a Trump type vibe and with the austerity 2.0 ripping the country apart it could give two years for a right wing (fascist) populist to come to the fore...although our FPTP system does make it difficult as UKIP found to Farage's disappointment, so maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily.

Sadly you have to move towards the electorate to win elections in this country, especially when the incumbent party has ruined some of the decent policies we did have.

We had a decent immigration system with FOM but sadly we can’t have that anymore. Ideally we’d have open borders.

Our policy at the moment is points based.
