I've been getting sent automatically to the App Store to Ladbrokes and William Hill apps this morning.

iPhone 4 on Safari

ios7.1.2

on Wifi

I'll also try to see which ads are on the page, and let you know.

I'm having the same problem... iPhone 6 on Safari, iOS 9.2.1 on wifi. It's coming up every single time I click on to a new page of the forums. There are no other ads on the page.

Soz to hear that Neil. Any reason things are precarious? Increase in costs or fall off in traffic?

too many people using adblockers.

The costs are about the same (actually, far less cos would you like to know how much I'm [not] earning?).

The traffic if 50%+ more than this time last year.

The revenues are half what they were this time last year.

Adblocker use by people who think the world gives them everything for free.

Thats a mess about adblockers Mr G. Soz mate.

not your fault.

I'm doing what I can ... efests is only here today because I've taken out the biggest loan I've ever taken out to keep it going in the hope things turn around ... but its now at about the point where efests survival could only be via another loan, and that ain't going to happen.

I realise these hijacking ads don't help, but the only way to guarantee there's none of them is by no ads at all - which is impossible to do if efests is to still be here at the end of this month.

Is there any way of getting the costs down?  There may be resources other than financial that some of the readers on here can help with?  Lots of us have bits of webspace that may be able to help out.  I've noticed that it's now much easier to upload images directly when posting - is that an extra cost that makes much difference?

I know you've given this more thought than any of us already and this forum + site has obviously been able to survive longer than the competition, but it might be possible that there's something we can do?  Are your costs mainly hosting, or is it more Scottie's time?

I'm not talking about trying to come up with clever business models that you've already considered, but actual concrete help to mitigate the running costs.  I don't think any of us want a re-run of the MacKeeper thread from 2014!

the biggest costs by a long long shot are wages - even when I'm paying myself the very minimum I need to survive (and can't survive on that minimum for much longer).

I doubt there's anyone giving away free hosting of the big capacity that's needed here, tho it would help if someone could. Hosting is around 15% of turnover.

Are you able to divulge the numbers you're talking about?  Or are they commercially sensitive/private for some other reason?

It varies between three:

1. Loads something starting ads.glispa then c.glispa then rd.glispa then the offerwall.monetise link (which gives me the game app page

2. Loads the same ad.glispa then c.glispa sequence then the rd.glispa link (which gives me the content not available in your area page)

3. Loads something with tracking in the url, then 8330.api-03 then opens the App Store prompt, which takes me to the William Hill app.

I've attached the screenshots I can get but they're speedy little buggers.

I was getting exactly this about 12-1 last night.

I'm reluctant to go into too much detail because as a small company with low turnover and few costs it'd be too revealing about stuff such as Scottie's wages - which I'm not sure he'd want in the public domain.

However, last year his wages accounted for more than 50% of company turnover ... which i'm sure gives some idea of how other things which need paying sit.

Oh of course, you wouldn't want to reveal that.  I meant in terms of bandwidth, storage + compute requirements.  That kind of thing.

I currently have 2 servers that are a better spec than the DS-4000's on this page, but also need extra capacity so am also using Amazon's s3 service (tho they keep mailing to say I need one of their better packages given the traffic). After June I'll be able to drop the s3 service for 6-ish months because of the lower load and save myself around £1k because of not using that.

It's not storage space which is the server issue, it's the ability to properly service the requests with server speed/ability. Ideally I need more powerful servers (probably 3 of the DS-8000's would do it) but they just can't be afforded.

Ok, thanks.  Not low numbers. :-|

yep, they do, as they're a guaranteed income (because many of the ads are pay-per-click, the ad revenue isn't guaranteed).

I'll look into it on payday. Given how much I'm on these days it's only fair!

I have no idea if this is any help at all but this company is very cheap for hosting and their customer service is superb.

https://www.freevirtualservers.com/unlimited-web-hosting

their best spec'd server is lower spec than my servers, and they're clearly aiming at the low-end market too - which means stuff like their data-pipes and support is likely to be low-end too. And that aside, they're not particularly cheap either (tho are a little cheaper than the peeps I use).

The geezers I use I've been using for all of the time efests has existed, and while they're not the very cheapest their prices are reasonable and their infrastructure is excellent. They regularly 'win' (I'm not sure how the 'win' is awarded) 'UK top host'.

And I've seen them grow from a 2 man company where I used to get the boss out of bed at 4am on a Sunday morning cos I'd crashed my server, to a company that employs tens of staff that I can get good service from (tho do sometimes have to shout at them &/or phone the boss whose personal number I still have) ... and all of this plus the big hassle in server moves gives me a deal I'm happy with.

    • https://x.com/amirtibon/status/2083054470871535853   Some thoughts on the Gaza agreement announced overnight, which despite my reservations and concerns, I hope will be implemented. 1. Donald Trump is trying to collect "wins" and "achievements" ahead of the midterm elections. His party is entering that election at a disadvantage, but because Democrats may choose weak and unpopular candidates in specific states, much like Republicans did in 2022, there's a reason for Trump to at least try achieving a surprising result like the one Biden secured four years ago.   2. The will to provide Trump such a "win" was an important motivation for all sides involved in this agreement: Hamas, Netanyahu, Qatar, Egypt, UAE and Turkey. All of them hope, each for their own reasons, that the transactional president will remember their role in the agreement and the positive media coverage it has generated and will continue to generate. You can like it or not, but that's the nature of diplomacy, especially in the Middle East, under Trump.   3. Netanyahu and his band of liars in the Israeli media (and the last few suckers in the American media still buying his spin) are already trying to oversell the agreement and present it in terms that contradict the Board of Peace statements and briefings. Of course, the October 7 Prime Minister can't just say the truth on this one, which goes something like: "I'm trying to stay on good terms with Trump ahead of an election here in Israel that will determine my personal fate and whether or not I go to jail in 2027."   4. For Hamas, the agreement is a way to buy time and survive, which is basically the organization's overarching goal since October 7. They lost most of their leadership and thousands of their fighters; they will also, I believe, give up some of their weapons to the new Gaza-based Palestinian government, which is a good thing. But at the bottom of all their decisions is a simple calculation: being able to say, "we committed the most deadly and humiliating attack against Israel since the start of the conflict, and survived as a movement and an organization to tell about it."   5. Hamas was able to say that yesterday, before the agreement was signed, and it can also say that today, after the conclusion of the negotiations. So in that regard, the agreement is preferable to the murky post-war reality that preceded it, in which Hamas was recruiting again thousands of young fighters, holding on to all its weapons, and controlling 99% of Gaza's population, making money off people buying fuel and cigarettes. Changing even a part of that terrible reality, by collecting some of the weapons and allowing progress on reconstruction under a non-Hamas government, is better. It means coming to terms with the fact that Israel under this government failed to dismantle Hamas and allowed its survival even before this agreement was signed.   6. Do I think the agreement will be fully implemented over the next 300 days, as I understand the timeline? I'm highly skeptical. But I'm also asking: what are the alternatives? Netanyahu, in his quest for political survival at all costs, ignored David Ben-Gurion's national security strategy of seeking short and decisive wars, which was based on Israel's unique internal and external challenges that make it dangerous for this country to have long wars of attrition. The result is an Israel that is hated, isolated and denounced around the world like never before, and is totally reliant on the support of one man (TRUMP) to avoid crushing international sanctions. Going to war in Gaza once again based on the same promise of "finishing Hamas," which this government failed to achieve after three long years, would have been suicidal unless Trump promised his full backing. And Trump, for good reasons, can't give such a commitment after his bitter experience with Netanyahu in Iran and Lebanon.   7. For me and my family, these are all very personal, not only political, questions. My six-year-old daughter will start school on the Gaza border in exactly one month, as we rebuild our life in the same home where Hamas tried to murder us on October 7. We've learned over the years to be highly skeptical of premature victory announcements and diplomatic celebrations. When these things collapse under the cynical realities of the conflict, most of those announcing them are not around to face the consequences. Still, I don't see a better alternative to the 20-Point Plan that Trump presented last year, at least not with Israel's current position of isolation and exhaustion under this government. So I have some hope that the agreement will succeed, even partially, and deliver a period of quiet. For us on the border, that would be significant after three years of war and trauma. And maybe in the long run, with different Israeli and Palestinian leadership, this will become a first step in a broader positive change for the region.
