Barog is a tiny, picturesque village located on a rail route between Kalka and Shimla. Though not a very ‘touristy’ hill-station near Shimla, it is known for its spectacular hill views and salubrious climate. Barog is precisely the eight station as you travel from Kalka to Shima in train. This journey is described to be extremely scenic and beautiful with captivating postcard-like views and wonderful climate all through the year. Barog is famous for all this but is also known as a haunted place, here is why.

Shimia was always favourite ‘summer capital’ of the British, thanks to its temperate climate. In Early 19th century, British engineer Barog was commissioned by the government to construct a rail route from Kalka to Shimla. Armed with only his judgement and some rudimentary instruments, he set out to dig tunnels from opposite sides. But these two tunnels did not meet and hence the construction had to be left midway at the present day Barog. The engineer was humiliated and discharged from his duties after he was made to pay a fine of Rs 1 (a huge sum, back then!). Disillusioned with life, Barog killed himself and was buried next to the tunnel number 33 which was later completed by another engineer, Since then, it is said that the ghost of Barog roams around the tunnel and tries to speak to anyone who passes by.

The ghost, it is claimed, does not harm anybody but simply talks or shares anecdotes. It is believed that if travellers visit the tunnel and yell Barog’s name, he answers back! So, next time you pass by this tunnel make sure to say hello to the ghost from us!
