So because they offer a large financial package that should generate more quality English options? Makes perfect sense.

My use of the word giant is more in terms of attraction of managers (whether from England or abroad) rather than production of English managers,  The England international job is one of the most sought after jobs in world football due to the salary and the fact they are willing to consider outsiders.

But in this specific case they weren't willing to accept outsiders, hence the original remark about a supposed giant only being able to generate two poor home-grown options. If it's the money they're offering is what makes them a giant why would have a bearing on the quality of English managers available?

England are not a giant. That's really the point. The English FA and the English media would like everyone to think otherwise and believe they can run with the big dogs. Now and then they may get the odd scalp (but sure who doesnt), but they never are really in contention for any of these tournaments and they do not have the long term consistency one sees of the top international countries. Its things just like the amount of money they waste on managers that make em believe this rubbish. Sure isn't in the home of the greatest league on Earth, eh? ;)

That's not entirely true. The 'home' nations have special status within FIFA at a number of different levels, as originators of the game.

Combined with the UK's historic, militaristic and economic status, and the merging/dis-merging/mis-use of the inter-changable 'UK' and 'England', plus some of the most-widely-known footie clubs in the world, the England footie team carries a status that's bigger than its football successes.

That may all true but we all know when it comes to what happens on the pitch Engerland are no giants of world football...........

True.

They're solidly in the top tier of teams tho, even if they never get near the top of that top tier.

Quarter finals at most WCs with some worse and (less often) some better is about where they are, I'd guess that would equate to about 9th in the world as an average.

I think most are missing the point. They're a financial giant in that FA revenue exceeds that of nearly all their international competition. Therefore when it comes to budget they can afford to attract the 'best'/most expensive managers.

For me giants are those who win tournaments or come very very close. England aint that.

like I say, they carry a weight that's greater than their on-field performance.

It's not too dissimilar of how UEFA carries a bigger weight within FIFA too.

Very true.

But Woy is not the best, and there was no need to make him expensive either. He's on that wage as a consequence of those before him who were supposedly the best but proved themselves distinctly average.

I don't necessarily disagree with the last comment but i also don't think it's that straight forward to measure.

You could argue that Capello did particularly well with pretty crap resources. He's also statistically, and we know how much you love a stat..., the best England manager of all time.

Ultimately, I don't disagree with Woy getting a comparable wage. Just as the FA said, it would be disrespectful to pay him less for the same job.

If Postman Pat is really the best England manager ever, I guess that only confirms how far mediocre can take you in football. ;)

Of course they aren't a giant, and yet you agreed when pink triangle when he said that their financial clout makes them a giant? I'm not convinced you know what your point is other than trying to make digs about England not being a big team to people who know that England aren't a big team You're preaching to the converted.

Again I don't know who you're making the greatest league on earth point and stupid winkyface to, I always argue that the greatest league on earth thing is bollocks.

Oh well at least there will be a competition Ashley wants to win next yea!

Meh. I really enjoyed our last season in the championship, and it's one of only 2 seasons I've enjoyed since the c**t bought our club. I'm more disappointed as this means we've probably lost our chance at having Benitez, who is a manager that might have given us a chance at getting a Europa or LC win in the next 3-5 years if we'd stayed up.

£80m spent this season alone on player recruitment suggests Ashley has also put faith in the wrong people

Agreed. Lots of dodgy signings. Mbemba and Wijnaldum the only ones that have done anything at all.

Although the squad is still stronger than Norwich and Bournemouth, so can't completely blame recruitment. Watching motd that was one defensive shambles.

I stopped watching at halftime, but yeah, it isn't just recruitment. Also management, morale, defensive organisation. There's a lot wrong at the club and has been for years.
