Neil have you looked into the costs of hosting on AWS I don't know if you own your own equipment and are just leasing rack space or if you are renting everything?

from just having a quick look it appears to be the case that they only support off-the-shelf CMS's, and wouldn't work for the bespoke CMS I use.

But much like with renting further servers in the same way i might do currently, it's an extra cost with no meaningful benefit for the one hour a year or so it would be utilised.

It's probably the case that if/when I upgrade again in around a year's time, all the problems will go away then anyway, due to the higher-spec kit that is always becoming the new standard. I'm managing the same performance now as I was a year ago on a bigger servers system than i'm using now.

My Gold runs out on the 7th. October, Neil will it auto renew of do I have to renew it?

I believe it'll auto-renew, as long as:-

1. you've not cancelled the auto-renewal (I know that some people have done).

2. that the payment method used before is still an active payment method. It can't auto-take a payment from a now-dead credit card, for example.

Cheers Neil, all the same but will keep a eye on it.

Thank you for this wonderful community you and Scottie have created, with out which I would not be attending Glastonbury next year or met people who are now good friends.

Was a bit random in getting on yesterday...mostly the to busy thing right at just before 9 :P

But to be expected, there are plebnty of companies who have the same/worse performence in busy periods than efestivals that I'd imagine have a lot more income!

I was on the site from about 8.15am onwards but not logged in. About 8.50am I got a busy page, so tried to log in to see if that would help (thinking maybe too many people and members only perhaps) and got another can't complete your request, busy message. Tried a few times, same busy message.

I opened the site in another browser and was luckily I was still logged in from a previous log in, however again any page I tried I kept getting busy page.

Gave up after a few minutes so I can't say when it started working again and I could have opened pages. Came back on about 9.25am after getting tickets and all was working fine then.

This has happened to me before, for 2011 tickets I think it was but not sure.

the 'busy' message was quite intermittent in the main - things would overload a little and give the 'busy' message, then within a minute or two it was back working, then a minute or two later it was overloaded again.

There was one exception to that, at around 9am i think .... when the load went up to 110 (it should ideally be less than 1, for those who don't know linux/unix) for a brief moment, and I was worried it wouldn't come back to me. It did, tho it took longer to come back to a more-sensible load so that people weren't getting the busy msg.

Mind you, the highest load i've ever seen on my servers was 190-something, and it still didn't kill the machine that time (i've seen one of my servers killed with a lower load, tho perhaps on older servers, I forget) - but it locked many people out for about 20 minutes for a reason that no one has ever satisfactorily explained to me .... does that sound a little familiar to what some people experienced on Sunday with See...?

Thanks Neil, as a non techie even I can understand that, makes sense to me.

It was no issue anyway I was just posting for the record really.

I'm always amazed you can even keep these boards from crashing with all the traffic and as I said, it could have just been a minute or so, and I could have got back on then but I didn't wait around to see.

I've learnt a few things over the years which certainly helps, tho it's still the case that the servers wouldn't withstand many more people than i've become used to trying to use this site at around the ticket sale.

There's no system that will keep working when it comes under too much pressure. The best it gets is to block out some of the requests, so that the system keeps working for just-some of the users.

Thanks Neil!

I've just joined the Gold scheme. it's about time I did as I use your site daily, and it is invaluable in the run up to Glastonbury ticket day and the festival itself. (Not that I ever manage to properly follow all the good techie advice!)

Really appreciate the vibrant community on here....
