No fires...?

To be honest, fires/flares beside chairs further back lights them and makes them easier to see. Far less chance of somebody stumbling over them if they are well lit. I too lamented the lack of flares this year, it's always something we've done when further back for a set and always attracted folk we didn't know over for a chat. Like Russy, I'm also saddened by the aggressive attitude towards things that have been an integral part of the festival for many years. Not everybody wants to be shoehorned up the front, so nothing wrong with enjoying the space further back (I agree that setting up a line of chairs inside the repeaters is asking for trouble, and scowling at all and sundry who trip over you doesn't help matters). But, sitting down, having a beer and a chat around a fire/bunch of flares after the bands finish was always preferable to cramming into LV/Shangri-la/Block 9 or whatever they like to call the late night areas nowadays, but then, that's just me, others prefer faux hedonism (ok, that was snotty!). Point is, the festival has always catered to a wide range of interests, and losing this part of it just makes it more like every other big gig in a field.

Still some of my best ever nights over the years have been sat around West holts/ Jazz World till the early hours making new friendships some that last as long as the fire and others that continue o this day. I guess with new late night areas catering for every whim then the days of simply enjoying the company of like minded individuals is gone.

We were told we couldnt have a fire on the floor at our campsite, security walked past several times Wednesday night in riversmead and looked at our fire then later on a guy came over told us we had to put it out as it had to be raised off the floor, argued abit with him and said that it was stupid as our fire was tiny! He told us to put it out but we didn't have water so he came back with a bottle of water and tried to put it out, then got called away to deal with some fence jumpers and the fire relit and he didn't come back.

He was a right arse about it though.

On Sunday night there was a huge fire towards the back of the Pyramid arena. It was too large for the stewards to put it out, and although several tried, the assembled crowd just booed and went to fetch discarded chairs etc. to keep it going. It was definitely a sociable event, although more so for dicks than anyone else.

Does anyone know what happened to that fire in the end? It must have been extinguished at some point but it was kept burning for ages and the stewards were resigned just to stand and watch.
