The bins are nuts, while I like them, and would be all in favour of them if they could actually be kept in order, they're so small, and rubbish collections are so infrequent, that within a day or two the majority are overflowing with piles of rubbish all around, able to fly off with the wind, so that even if you hold onto your litter, you'll just be holding onto it to effectively throw it on the ground later anyway. Glastonbury really needs more rubbish collections and more big, proper, industrial bins, or else the oil cans pretty much lining the pathways. With the amount of cash a big band costs (even to Glastonbury, who I know pay less) you'd think they could put a bit more money into hiring some people at minimum wage to manage the rubbish situation. Love the farm, leave no trace isn't very effective when the festival aren't even setting an example (as someone who does hold on to litter, despite that, in the vain hope that there'll be a bin that isn't full to the brim).

I have commented about this before but past a certain point of the day you just cant get a rubbish truck round to empty the bins as its just too busy. The oil drums have to be small enough to actually be physically empied by a person into the trucks as well, any larger and they couldnt be lifted.

thats the irritating thing its not like its much people are being asked to do....all you have to do is keep a trash bag in your campsite, if it fills up dump it by the bins for pickup and start another one.....dont leave anything scattered around, not hard.

I thought I had scarier pics than this but apparently not. Certainly a lot of stuff does get ditched though.

Usually i come back with a few bits and bobs that are leftover. Tarps from the gigantic tents people bring are a favourite. I'm very cautious, unlike some, when I go for a wander around but its easy to tell in a lot of cases when a campsite has been ditched. I've stumbled across at least a couple of tents that were brought along purely to be a toilet for a group of lads too. Truly disgusting.

Edit: Oh, also I am a country boy too and leave no traces. Everything goes home with me or in the bins.

If you look at the amount of litter in the pyramid field at the end of the night and the amount of bins around the site and how full they are, it's not hard to work out that there is too much litter to fit in all the bins.

Therefore the festival employs an army of litter pickers to pick it all up and dustbin lorries to come and take it all away.

This is a reasonable solution imo. The alternative would be so many bins that you couldn't move for fucking bins, or for everyone to bring their own plastic plate, cup and pint pot, carry this round and wash it after each use.

Any other suggestions?

it's usually pretty obvious which tents are abandoned and which have owners returning for them. if in doubt, walk on.

i'm still waiting for a 'perfect' tent (4 man, 2 bedroom, stand-up height) to be abandoned in my camping neighbourhood. in the rain last year, my mate and i amused ourselves by assessing the local real estate and which we'd be interested in if it was going begging come the monday. none on our list was obviously left so we came away empty handed.

edit to add: we leave nothing and tend to tidy up anything very close neighbours have left too. then again, in a burst of turning into our mothers, we're kind of prone to a bit of tidying wherever we're sat at the festival. *mum voice* "it takes 2 minutes"

great thread and a great point .....always amazes me the shit people leave behind.

we always grab a few bins and pop them next to camp ....it does help a bit .. each year i do try and take a couple of tents home with me to use through the year or just give to friends when we go camping but this year i need to get quite a lot because i need the material to make things for my sons festi .

im thinking of putting a tent collection sign on a corner of our field and maybe some of those people that do just leave shit behind might take there tents there and it can help both me and the festi cleaners .......i can take a few and the cleaning crew wont have to drag all the tents to a pick up point cos thell already be there ..!!!

When people do this tatting thing, how do you ensure that you're not stealing something somebody's going to come back for later? it's a great way to reduce the environmental and economic impact of waste, but I'd be way too concerned that I was unintentionally nicking someone's stuff!

I just cannot comprehend what goes through somebody's mind to think it's okay to leave piles of rubbish/waste in their wake.
