Britpop's 20th Anniversary

Didn't think I'd ever hear These Animal Men on radio 2 . I remember NME trying to create the new wave of new wave scene which basically consisted of one band (two if you include S.M.A.S.H from my home town of Welwyn Garden City)

S*M*A*S*H are one of my favourite bands although it's no surprise that the NWONW scene didn't take off, they weren't exactly radio-friendly. I think Sleeper and Elastica may have been chucked in there at the start as well.

I don't know if it's better, but I can't listen to those proper Britpop albums anymore. Wore them out I think.

Know what you mean but parklife is still a great collection of songs, but the singles on it can grate a bit. Still also love modern life is rubbish, elastica, first two supergrass, different class, his n hers

I too love SMASH, saw them a few times, got a couple of their 12"s too. 'I want to kill somebody' etc. I've been wandering around all morning singing 'Real Surreal'

Britpop means about as much to me now as "Britrock", "Britfolk" or even "Britfunk". Meaningless. UK press needed to re-assert some kind of hierarchy post-Grunge. It was a branding excercise if anything.

There was a general air of "positivity" around however. It was palpable. 1994-1997 was a wondrous era for new music in general. I have vivid memories of the time.

Absolutely. A few people are moaning about this anniversary being celebrated, as if we're all just remembering how amazing Blur and Oasis were.

Britpop was dire 20 years ago and I'm sorry to say that time has done nothing for it

some of my fave albums from that era. Black Grape - Its Great When You're Straight, James - Whiplash, The Charlatans - The Charlatans and Telling Stories. Whether these are actually Britpop albums is up for debate. They had definitely moved on from Madchester though.

I actually like the Second Coming as well. I never felt the criticism was justified at the time but it is fair to say it has aged really well and once you get past all the hysteria that surrounded it, it actually stands up as a fantastic album.

I actually like the Second Coming as well. I never felt the criticism was justified at the time but it is fair to say it has aged really well and once you get past all the hysteria that surrounded it, it actually stands up as a fantastic album.

The Second Coming made me learn guitar. It really is quite fantastic + as long as you don't think of it as the next album by the lads who did "The Stone Roses" and Fools Gold.

It was just unfortunate that Oasis had stole the Roses' thunder. By the time Second Coming was released, the knives were out for the Roses. The media were queuing up to have a pop at them. The album itself was being judged against their debut and it did not help that Definitely Maybe had been released 6 months earlier.

The Roses only had themselves to blame for the debacle that caused their downfall but I have always felt that album was unfairly criticised and no where near as bad as the reviews it got.

I think it drags a by towards the end, but those first two tracks are full of guitar w*nkery that I could listen to over and over.
