I cant thank Glasto enough for this booking, its the only chance im probably ever going to get to one of my all time favorites. Wife hates them but will be happily entertained by another act with some of freinds.

I, on the other hand will be right in the middle of the action trying to keep up with everyone else( Im nearly 50) so will need all the help and support i can get afterwards. Payment in smiles and cider for all those willing to help a sore old man

I've been checking out people's reaction to metallica playing glastonbury and on the whole it's seems to be more positive than negative.

Certain sections of the media would like you to believe that there is a large backlash to metallica playing the pyramid stage.but hey,they couldn't have asked for a better headliner who has caused so much of a fuss to report and write about...is anyone really talking about the other two headliners?

Oh, come on, she puts on a wonderful pop spectacle. People loved it.

I'd say Mumford were comfortably the worst ever, it's not just that I hate the band (I do), but stuff like Coldplay, I can appreciate why people who just don't really listen to music like them, they're big and theatrical and throw out unchallenging and watered down pastiches of other, better bands. Which is probably very appealing for somebody who couldn't give less of a shit about getting into rock music and only own about 4 CDs. Mumford, on the other hand, are a bunch of wet blanket Tories who have a limited back catalogue of dull songs that all sound the same, where's the appeal? They have no showmanship either, don't really do anything on stage apart from rudimentary banjo strumming, so I just don't get why people want to see it.

The reality is (for better or worse) there are more Beyonce fans at the festival that there are Led-Zep fans, or Fleetwood Mac fans etc.

And there were a lot of Mumford fans last year. It's hardly surprising the festival books popular acts.

It's a shame, as there is a complete lack of female headliners. It's depressing someone like her was given the opportunity over all the other much more worthy candidates.

Lack of female headliners is a problem, much more a problem with the industry than G though. Who are the possible female candidates to headline? Florence, Kylie, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, all big pop stars who polarize opinion. R&L have done well with having Paramore headline this year, but there is a startling lack of women in rock music, the good ones don't really get big, and the fact it's such a boys club makes it not all that appealing to women in the first place. In many ways, pop and rock are stuck 70 years in the past when it comes to women.

I was pleasantly surprised by Beyonce, I know she's not one for the musical purists but she put on a good show and she does command at lot of attention. With U2 and Coldplay as the other headliners that year, both stadium pop guitar music and arguably the two biggest bands in the world, I think they needed to have someone very different like Beyonce on the Sunday.

I think the beauty of Glastonbury is that they can have her headlining one year and Metallica 3 years later

I really wish PJ Harvey had been given a chance after her last album, but yeh, its a shitty scenario for sure. Amy winehouse would have been an obvious choice. I've no idea what the answer is. Women are fucked, basically.

Agree wholeheartedly that it would be great to see PJ get a high profile billing, though I fear she'd polarise opinion as much as the "pop" artists they could put on. Witness the grumbling about Nick Cave (a force of nature who I'd be happy to see at every festival!). Adele could probably headline at this stage, Bjork certainly could (but again, would have just as many people moaning), Madonna could too (though she was bloody awful when I saw her at Coachella). Fact is, Pyramid headliners, unless it's somebody universally respected like Stevie Wonder, will be criticised by those who want to see their favourite band on top of the pile. Outside of Pyramid headliner material though, there's many female artists that I haven't seen at the festival who could do a high profile set, Dolly this year, Aretha would fit the legends bill too (no idea what she's like nowadays), Kate Bush if she could be coaxed into playing live…all would be well received. This year Beth Orton and Suzanne Vega are playing elsewhere in the festival in high profile positions, Ellie Goulding (no matter whether you like her stuff or not, she's popular and a good booking for the Other), St Vincent, Nina Persson, Lykke Li, all on big stages...HAIM, Warpaint and Chvrches (all female-led) featuring prominently on the lineup…so, I wouldn't go as far as saying that women are f*cked, but I get the point you are making about the lack of Pyramid headliner status female artists...

Note the percentage of female artists vs percentage of people who are female. It's a sorry state of affairs.

been listening to the Black Album quite a bit the last few days and it's made me realise i really can't wait for Sad But True. that big pause in the song is just magnificent, and despite it not being thrashy the song is heavy as fuck
