would be the first genuinely interesting pyramid headliner in a while i reckon

been going since 07 and only seen Jay Z and Blur on all those years

this would definitely get me there. it would be anything but beige and would massively trump the beige blandness of mumford, arctic monkeys, bruce playing his new album.... all that. not to mention kasabian and to a lesser extent arcade fire.

they would pull it off and if you dont want to watch it, go elsewhere. perhaps the fest could push other stages / areas of the festival as an alternative if you dont fancy metallica, not that they should have to.

it would be a ballsy booking and thats why it'd be so captivating and ultimately a success. it would definitely get people talking round the site before and after

Im not a Metalica fan, have no interest in seeing them and rarely watch Pyramid headliners anyway, I do however think that metalica headlining would be a good move for the festival.

As we all "know", glastonbury dosent do metal, well that is up for some debate but booking such a big, heavy, established group as this would, I think, open up the possibilities and expectations for the future in the same way that earlier booking rap acts seemed to do. They are obviously big and real quality in their genre, they could without doubt headline.

So bring on Metalica, I wont be there but enjoy yourselves.

I'm not sure they've had one since Archaos.

Glastonbury success is winning over the people who are not your fans who will inevitably be watching any band.

I'm struggling to see how they might succeed in doing that.

Out of curiosity. Was Jay-z generally considered a success? (I didn't see him so genuine question)

And what was your consensus beforehand on that?

Yep, Jay-Z was - because he taylored things to that audience.

It was only the luddites like Noel G who decided it was a fail before it started, but rap is a massive mainstream genre; metal is not.

I don't understand people who would stay for one song and then leave muttering 'too heavy for me' or something. Surely you would know what they are like before you turn up and there is so much more to do than hang around for half an hour or so waiting for something you won't like.

Those people are baffling.

why? If people only go and see bands they already know and like, there's little point to the idea of a music festival.

So how long would you guess at being able to confirm the final 2 headliners! Kasabian more so for financial gain? Are we looking at those 3, Or could another surprise be sprung?

if you're asking me, I can't give you any timescale for when i might get my hands on that info. I might not get my hands on that info.

My best guess for when Glastonbury will announce is in around 5 or 6 weeks.

I like the controversial, experimental bookings. It's exciting. It makes the set feel like an 'event'.

Metallica headlining Glastonbury could be special or it could be a disaster. That just isn't true of somebody safe like Kasabian.

The formula is simple: They just need to play their most accessible songs at the beginning and the end. People will forgive a 6 minute long guitar solo if it's in the middle of the set.

Throw in some great lights and pyrotechnics, and they've got a great chance.

Someone else there in 1990 really enjoyed Archaos:

To be honest, I'm not sure I did.

It was visually impressive, but I don't think I really got the idea of what a non-musical act (at least, in the normal sense) was doing headlining a festival.

(I have seen Archaos a few times since then tho - so I get what their act is about).

I understand that, if you don't know or are not sure what a band is like, but everyone knows what Metallica are like so why bother going to see them to walk away after 5 minutes if you don't like that sort of thing.

No problem about going to see different things if you are open minded, but if you are not, then what's the point, plenty more things to see around the site.

I realize stuff like Gorillaz or U2 where people might think would be good but turned out not to be would suffer so-called mass walkouts but it just would seem a bit odd to go and see something that you would not like and then moan because it is as you expected. Why not just go and see something different you are not sure about?

I'm probably talking about the peeps who never leave the Pyramid fields and just can't arsed to move until it finally becomes all too much!

Hmmm, I disagree.

Kasabian are without doubt a safe booking, but they still have the ability to make something special of it. It'll depend what Kasabian we get on the day I reckon - the one whose egos are trying to be bigger than Liam's, or the one that's been desperate to headline Glastonbury for years because they totally get it.

I've been no fan of metal for 30-ish years, and at that time Metallica were just breaking thru - and I hated them (as did most of the metal scene back then; it was the 'kids' who mostly warmed to them).

I've not really got much interest in seeing them, but that doesn't mean I might not go and take a look.

I'd be doing that knowing what they're like, but I'd still be hopeful that it might somehow grab me. I wouldn't be going determined to hate them.

So that's why I might bother. :)

The point is that if you're open-minded there is a point - but that doesn't mean every open minded person has to like them.

You go with an open mind, to find out if you like them.

A fair point, but I still think what is working against them is the surprise factor: they've headlined T in the Park and Reading only a couple of years ago, and have subheadlined Glastonbury a couple of times before. People know what to expect. I'm struggling to think what they could pull out of the bag to make it special.

To sum up the discussion thus far the main question is, how narrow minded is the average Glastonbury goer? The answer most people seem to be getting is"very".

It's a pretty depressing way of looking at people IMO, I'd like to think that people were more open minded.

I dont see it that way. Metal is generally a genre you like or you dont. There isnt much middle ground with it.

I dont think there are 70,000 metal fans among a glastonbury audience, so it is a mistake to put them on the pyramid.

Attending Glastonbury has made me more open minded, in life in general, not just musically.

I always thought dance music was shite and couldn't understand why people would listen to it. I now understand why people listen to it even though I still think it's shite.

It's a start.

I'm not a metal fan, most of the folk I go with aren't metal fans, but I bet we still end up going to check out Metallica.

(Clashes depending, of course)

As will I, and thousands of others. I wonder how many of us will still be there by the end though!

Do metallica have many female fans I wonder? Any girls on this forum a fan of them? Please someone shatter my stereotypes.

what they have got to pull out of the bag is a hatful of hits that everyone knows (tho they might not realise it yet). That puts them in a very good place from the off.

Aside from what songs a band might play, there's also the band's attitude. You've got your Liams, and then you've got your Guy Garveys - and only one of those types is able to do the indefinable 'special' thing.

    • Yeah credit where it's due, that's a really good price to try and help get people in.   Most of my early football games were to see West Brom as my uncles are Baggies. Did a few trips to the Hawthorns, Luton, MK Dons, did most of the London grounds between Championship + Prem.
    • would you be able to post the statement? I can’t seem to find it
    • I worked Wilderness for Oxfam this weekend. I was very lucky as my shift was in the arena on Sunday afternoon & I saw all of Annie's set.   I echo every word. She was brilliant. The Legend slot is made for her.
    • Seeing more stuff about Madonna turning down glasto for three nights in London, what do we reckon? Likelihood looking low now or keep the faith?
    • Do we think there is realistic chance Sziget could get cancelled? I'm reading about Hungarian energy crysis and many measures and prohibitions due to this.    They relesed a statement and comment section is on fire..
