Who's going to own 2013?

In terms of sets that seemingly everyone talked about for ages afterwards, and those that missed them regretted, then I think it is: -

2009 - Blur

2010 - Stevie Wonder

2011 - ? Probably Pulp.

For me in 2011 QOTSA blew me away. That set was perfect and after a torrid start to the festival weatherwise, a nice hot sunny Sunday finished off by this made the weekend for me.

This year I'm convinced it will be Chic. Such a feel good band on such a feel good stage. Friday night so there will be loads of energy in the crowd. Just needs to be a sunny day and it will be soaringly epic.

regardless of how good any of the other acts are, people will be talking about The Rolling Stones. as has been said, on this forum we've discussed them to absolute death and so them being at Glastonbury has just become the norm, but them being there is absolutely massive and it's hard to think of an act who could even compare to them in terms of hugeness. so shit performance or not, they're what people will remember from 2013

in terms of a band playing a fantastic performance and having the crowd in the palm of their hand - gotta be Chic. i'm actually really looking forward to being in that crowd, hopefully at the end of a hot sunny day, drink in hand, smile on face, dancing and singing in unison to all of these fantastic songs. think it'll be something really special and a big talking point for anybody there

I don't understand this thread at all - is the idea that a popular band will be unexpectedly good? Obviously, unknown bands cannot have much impact as there will be few people in their audience, whilst big bands suffer from the weight of expectation. Is the OP asking which hugely popular band, who everybody expects to be mediocre, will actually be entertaining? Odd question.

Just idle entertainment really, but I was thinking about 2009 in particular, when such a big deal was made about Bruce, but it's generally remembered for the epic Blur performance (though we all have our favourite moments, obviously).

Could the same thing happen again?

Could Chic or - horror of horrors -M*mfords steal the show???

A couple of thoughts:

1) The sheer size of Glasto means no one act can truly "own it" - it's doubtful that a single act is ever seen by a majority of those who attend the festival (even the Pyramid headliners)

2) If the question is which set will be most popular with those who watch it, then hopefully I'll be able to shed some light on that subject with the annual post-Glasto efesters poll, which tends to throw up some interesting answers but generally confirms those acts people talk about positively/negatively

Probably no one will own it.

I think it can only really be pyramid stage acts, otherwise not enough people will see them.

People still talk about Radiohead in 1997 or Pulp in 1995 or Faithless in 2002, but you only very rarely hear about acts on smaller stages from these time periods.

Most pyramid headliners are okay. Nothing special, but decent enough.

In the years I've been going, I've found it very difficult to predict when a special performance is going to occur.

Taking 2009 for example, I thought Neil Young would be amazing, and he was; I thought Bruce Springsteen would be alright but nothing special, so I didn't watch him, and it sounds like he was; and I thought Blur would be alright but nothing special, so I didn't watch them, and it sounds like they were incredible. Regrets, eh? In 2011, I thought U2 would be amazing, but I found them to be alright but nothing special.

I know this is all subjective, but does anyone have a good track record of predicting who is going to be amazing?

I think all three headliners this year will be alright. I'll see Rolling Stones because I think they have the most chance of being amazing, but I think the likely outcome will be everyone saying "yeah they were pretty good, not sure what the fuss was about really, but it was good to say I was there, and it was nice to have a big singalong." I hope I'm wrong though :)

I understand that the government are looking to sell it off to Richard Branson.

Before you protest that they don't own the festival, has that ever stopped them before?

Bit of politics there.....
