I find fans often reflect the style & beliefs of the people they profess to idolise though. Either because they're too stupid to come up with their own views, or because they feel they've found an idol that stands for what they already believe in. Obviously that doesn't apply to every fan, but a certain proportion no doubt.

In late 2004-2005 you couldn't move for teenagers rebelling against the system because American Idiot was their gospel. It may no longer be that way, but I maintain the fact that Green Day make shit music for part time 'punks' & U2 fans.

Are the people talking up Green Day listening to the same band as me?

Saying they wouldn't be booked by V festival, but Radiohead or Arcade Fire would? wow.

Green Day are 3 chord shite and I've never met anyone over the age of 18 who still listens to them.

bashing the previous years' lineups has nothing to do with nostalgia, it's just really, really bad this year. clearly aimed to cater for the younger, V fest type audiences, who only know about a band if they've had a hit single out recently

Last time I saw Green Day at a headline show the majority of the crowd were late 20's and over. And to echo what others have been saying, the quality of Green Day's current material doesn't really factor into their popularity at the festival. I mean even the band themselves said at Wembley 'The new stuff is shit anyway' before launching into like 16 old tracks.

Also Pulp is the most hilarious band to comment on, seeing as they started V Festival.

Except it's not really done that has it? If it had I could understand that, but it's booked a handful of bands from that type of genre. (Reading's actually a Blues fest btw :P)

There's very little strength from any genre. The best way i've seen it described is that they tried to appeal to everyone but failed. As if they've tried to get a really mixed substance and spread it, but it's come out uneven and lacking (I was attempting to use a butter metaphor there but it's really not worked).

I agree that it's insane to use 'Reading is becoming like a rockier V Fest' as an insult if the bands you'd prefer Reading to book are Pulp, Arctics and the like.

However, what is Reading if not a rockier V Fest? They are both festivals which are similar in almost every way, apart from Reading books heavier acts V doesn't at the expense of (almost all) mainstream pop, with indie the crossover in the middle. Seems accurate to me.

No but the point remains that most people complaining are for lack of indie, and those with a more diverse music taste seem to be ok with it.

Fair enough if it doesnt appeal to a wide variety of people but the fact it does still almost sell out and theirs BBC coverage proves there is still an interest in it, and thats what makes it great it my book.

    • So bad honestly. I get that bad weather happens but their communication was non existent. When you're managing crowds of tens of thousands of people, it's just not good enough. I left when Massive Attack was cancelled (the first time) and it genuinely did feel unsafe trying to get out. No one knew what was going on, people still sitting in the ground when there were hoards of people trying to leave, no crowd management at all...   I've been to PS enough times to know sometimes you need to just roll with it but this was way worse than "the bar queue was 30 minutes long".    Today will be better but still feel super disappointed.
