I think a band playing mainly new music is refreshing. I don't want to see a band constantly playing the same songs with a few new tracks tacked onto the end.

I want a set built around new tracks, with the older songs slotted in for impact. Biffy are brilliant at this, and I'm excited for the set.

I guess the problem with festivals is you get more of the 'I'm only here because I loved your latest album' people in the crowd than at gigs. Therefore, you're kind of forced into catering for them.

That certainly seemed to be the case with The Black Keys last year, when it became pretty evident that a lot of the people around me only actually knew Lonely Boy...

i definitely understand that logic, especially when bands move to the Main Stage and have a crowd of gawping people who are watching to hear the latest hit. but even the Black Keys played almost as many songs from previous albums as the latest

but imagine if when, say, Metallica had released St Anger, they played it in full on their tour. they may have thought it was great, but the crowd sure as hell wouldn't of. same goes here really

That a tough one for me to be impartial on, and Kasabian were proven major festival headliners unlike Biffy,

They avent always been major festival headliners though, everyone has to start the journey as a major festival headliner somewhere. The fact is that we arent in an era where indie/rock is dominating the charts and there isnt a huge queue of ready made first time headliners. Apart from mumfords, I would say Biffy are next in line in terms of commercial guitar bands who havent headlined the major festivals yet.

I think for every fan that says they are not happy and doesn't buy because of the headliners there will be another who will come back. 2008 was a huge year and the penultimate instant sell out, the line up was lauded as great, I reckon a lot of the 08 fans would be tempted back with biffy, SOAD and even Eminem to an extent.

I don't think the headliners approach anywhere near the magnitude of the '08 headliners. I think people from '08 will have moved on, and those three wouldn't be strong enough to bring a decent amount back. Ironically enough, from those three , I could actually see Biffy being the biggest seller.

to an extent yeah that makes a lot of sense, but i also feel the lesser lineups of the following few years has soured a lot of people's views of Reading / Leeds all together (i say this not as fact but from the general consensus of a lot of people i know). but maybe i'm wrong and them having a 'heavy' headliner again will bring back a lot of people they've lost over the past few years. i do feel the 'heavy' day that was present at a lot of the lineups prior to and including '08 has been missed so if they can recreate that again it'd be great (although i suppose the list of heavy bands who could be a main stage undercard has somewhat decreased in my opinion)

Much the same way as others have come to the conclusion that SOAD, Biffy & Eminem wouldn't sell many tickets and would be a weak set of headliners.

Depends if people buy the tickets, it could be the best live set in the history of music but if 20,000 tickets are unsold then no not a success.

i honestly think Eminem will be the saving grace of this year's festival. i know an awful lot of people, and weirdly have overheard people on the street, saying they're seriously thinking of going purely to see Eminem. say what you want about him, he has pulling power, and whether the weekend sells out or not, his day definitely will

Think it would need a strong undercard tho, im guessing the fact that pre sale is still on is due to eminem being announced not selling that many tickets. I doubt fest will ever sell that well again.
