BBC Coverage 2013

I couldn't see another thread for this so hopefully this hasn't been already posted!

The new Connected Red Button service will be introduced today to 1.2 million homes with Virgin Media’s TiVo set-top box. Next year an array of televisions with an internet connection, as well as other set-top boxes including Freeview+ and YouView, will gain access.

Connected Red Button will take advantage of the internet to offer a much wider range of news clips, catch-up television and live sport and music. The BBC plans to use next year's Glastonbury Festival as a showcase for the new service, with the potential for dozens of live streams from the various stages, and backstage.

The old Red Button service, which there are no plans to withdraw, works by squeezing extra data into the broadcast signal, so is limited in how much material it can deliver and is not a true on-demand service; videos are simply played in a loop.

“It’s built on technology we would now regard as getting a bit dated,” said Daniel Danker, the BBC’s general manager of on demand.

The programmes and clips on the new version will instead be served via viewers’ home broadband connections from the BBC iPlayer. The Connected Red Button service is designed to be unlike browsing the web, however, and the programmes it brings up when pressed will be chosen by channel scehdulers rather than algorithms.

"The programmes come from iPlayer but are selected by humans to encourage things like serendipity," said Victoria Jaye, another BBC internet executive.

On channels that do not broadcast 24 hours, including BBC 4 and CBeebies, the new service will allow viewers to access programmes at any time.

Mr Danker, who declined to say how much the development of the new service had cost, could not say whether the Connected Red Button will be available to Sky subscribers, because BSkyB's is less "open" to outside content providers than Virgin Media.

I think it's down to how VM and TiVo deliver the Connected Red Button via the built in 10mb modem, that Sky's STB is not capable of a similar service.

I've had hours of pleasure re-visiting some performances, especially Arthur Lee and Stevie Wonder. Don't you like watching live performances?

I love being at live performances, but watching a 2d version with none of the feelings? nope, not for me. I want the smell of a campfire, the taste of the manky booze, the slight shiver as the wind gets up, the nudge from the person next to you, the whiff of a joint being passed round, the overhead comment from the person in front, all of those things. It's about experiencing it for me, not watching it.

sorry, I know the question wasn't aimed at me. Apologies for jumping in there.

I used to enjoy watching what i'd taped (during my recovery week!) but the last time i couldn't be bothered due to the fact the presenters seem to be getting more and more annoying each year. I much prefer the red button and picking and choosing without all the annoying waffle. It's also said television coverage that's made ticket day hell.

suddenly everyone wants to go. It used to be our best kept secret secret.gif

    • Another one from Sheffield DocFest this weekend, Earth Wind & Fire docu, directed by Questlove. Sensational archive footage, contributions from band members, family, plus a lot of very big fans (Stevie, Lionel, Flea, the Obamas) and a warts n all assessment of the genius / flawed human being that was Maurice White. Also, I never realised he started out as a jazz drummer with Ramsay Lewis. Well worth a watch.
    • In a 6,800-word Substack essay, external, the Clacton MP said "anti-white racism was embedded into the state", and that legislation aimed at equality was a form of "social cleansing"   .https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdjkd4mp93zo   The privileged white c**t hasn’t got a clue what racism is.
    • BBC iPlayer: Will serve as the main hub for past sets, including both recent hits and iconic archival gems. You can explore the BBC iPlayer to watch curated compilations, "Best of Glastonbury" recaps, and on-demand replays of historic headline performances. [1, 2, 3] TV Broadcasts (BBC Two & BBC Three): The channels will air dedicated compilation shows. Leading up to the weekend, you can watch archive programming such as Glastonbury: 70s Legends, 80s Legends, and 90s Legends on BBC Two. [1] Radio & BBC Sounds: Pop-up Glastonbury radio stations on BBC Sounds will feature non-stop coverage, including exclusive mixes and huge sets from past years
