It's sad isn't it that people talking to each other doesn't happen quite as easily as it does at Glasto (and other fests). It would be nice if things moved in that direction a little more outside of festivals. OK, you're going to meet some w*nkers but they'll be far outnumbered by those you would get on with. Mind you, it's easier said than done.

On Sunday last year I spent all day and night on my own cause my family and mate didn't want to see any of the bands that I wanted to see, and managed to strike up conversations with the people around me quite easily when I was feeling a bit lonely. The same thing happened at Bestival too. I wasn't that confident before I went to Glastonbury, a very shy and reserved kid, and talking to strangers at Glasto helped me regain my confidence over the years I've been.

But you are right, it does take alot of courage.

That's good to hear that Glasto and Bestival helped you overcome your shyness. I fall into the shy and reserved camp too when it comes to talking to strangers. Perhaps I should go off to a festival on my own and then that will force me to talk to others. Mind you I find that having a few drinks helps ease conversations along a little.

Its a British (or maybe just an English) thing unfortunately. We're just not very good with strangers. We're not used to it. Go to loads of other countries and its much more common. I used to be the same, but having lived in America for a year I'm much better than I used to be at chatting to strangers. I've got no choice, they're so loud and open over here.

When I go back home people think I'm mental for starting a conversation with a random guy in a pub

Yes, we can be too reserved as a nation. That said, I have witnessed my mother talking to anyone and everyone throughout my whole life. She'll just strike up a conversation with a complete stranger and in next to no time they'll be nattering away to each other. Then again, she is Irish and I think that helps as they are not as reserved as we are over here, in my opinion.

I still get really quiet when I'm around people I don't know in the real world. This weekend I'm visiting my mate and going out with his friends at Uni, I'm absolutely shitting bricks about it. But at Glasto it seems like I'm more outspoken cause It's the place I am most comfortable at. To be fair at Bestival I think most of the people I spoke to were probably thinking "Who's this drunk bastard and why is he still talking to us" :P

Its a bitch aint it

One year I got a lift back with a friend to Bristol to catch the train, problem is she had completely forgotten where her car was, and I mean completely. No fucking clue (the carpark she had in her head didn't even exist). Took us 5 hours of carrying all our stuff around before we finally located it. We were dead.

On the plus side, the roads were clear by the time we got out the carparks.

I made a mistake one year of remembering that my car was parked next to a big red van. Of course when I came to leave the big red van had already gone and I spent a long time pushing my wheelbarrow round looking for my car. Now I make a mental note of its position relative to fixed landmarks (pylons, hedges etc) as well as taking care of the bit of paper that you get which says what car park its in.

I forgot to make a mental note of where my car was after coming back onto the site for a second time ( I'd gone off to get more drink because we had drank all that we had brought for the festival in one night!). When it came to leaving on Monday I hadn't got a clue where the car was. I went up to a steward for help. He asked me what time I had come in at. I told him roughly what time it was and he said 'it's over there' and pointed in the direction of where my car actually was to be found. Marvellous man.

This

The slightly sad feeling I get on Sunday because I know it's the last day.

That my knees don't stand up to it as well as they used to. I don't want to pace myself - It's GLASTONBURY!!!

People who tape off "their area".....and on that theme... People who sigh or tut loudly because you walk past their tent.

Trendy young girls who look panic stricken if you talk to them. I think it must be because having a conversation with anyone over 30 is ruining their "look".

Definitely the journey from and to the car with all your stuff, the rain, the mud, the rubbish.

I like loads of music though - almost anything. I like more and more stuff as I get older instead of less and less. It almost makes up for the knees.

A mate of mine had to leave on the Sunday night in 2009 as he could only get a half day off on the Monday.

Left after the Prodigy and then forgot where his car was, spent 2 hours looking for it in the pouring rain, found it drove home and got into bed at 6am, then had to be in work for 12. He'd also spent the entire weekend doing coke and ketamine.

Don't think the day went too well for him. :)

being a massive idiot myself..me and my mate spent 2+hours on the 2nd day in 2010 (weds/thurs?!) we drove down early morning gates opened weds i think? so would've been thurs - england game was on wed?

took a bit of booze to site with us.. left loads at the car to go back next day..yep next day we can't find the car..walked around for ages

urghh god ..I always have the Monday and the tuesday off..means using more holiday days..but I'd rather do that - need the time to recover!!

So does he, but he'd run out of holiday so was facing working a full day monday, until he buttered up the manager and managed to get a half day.

Although I doubt he would have stayed so late at the festival had he needed to be in at 8am monday.
