Thanks for the advice all I'm sure I will indeed find out a lot more once I hit the streets, so to speak. Maybe rightmove has been lying to me in some of the areas I mentioned!

Brentford does seem pretty nice - im staying in a nice new block by the water. But commuting is one of my pet hates, ideally I'd like to live somewhere within comfortable enough walking distance to do on a summers evening, or if the tube is down etc. Kentish Town seems to fit the bill for that, plus it's good for Euston for coming back up north.

Harrow's quite nice, that's really nearby, very suburban though. Or if you were looking to live somewhere a little more central with a bit more of a buzz then Kilburn's a pretty cool area. Lots going on round there. Big arts scene. Easy tube ride out to Uxbridge aswell

Yeah sorry it is just outside of uxbridge but thinking of going into london if its do-able. Is kilburn particluarly expensive (for london lol)? definitely seems like an option, Cheerrs

the communting to central London is quicker from completely outside London than it is within London - you'd get to Oxford Circus quicker from (say) Woking than you will from (say) Brentford. And the accomodation will cost far less.

It's not cheap but for zone 2/3 it's on the cheaper side. Would definitely consider it. I really like it, has a great vibe to it. Good links as well and an easy commute

It is.

My ex used to travel from Aldershot (which is 20+ minutes further out than Woking) to Hyde Park for work every day. It took her less time than it took her colleague to travel from Acton to the same building.

The downside was that the travelling from Aldershot cost more .... BUT the difference in housing costs made it cheaper to live in Aldershot, along with it being quicker from Aldershot.

(it's possible that not everything about that still applies, as it was nearly 20 years ago now - but I doubt it hugely different).

My mistake - I meant St James' Park (they were working at the Home Office when it used to be in Queen Annes Gate).

an overland network that mostly shuts down around 11pm. There's a reason why it costs more to live near the tube in London... it's very handy

You were talking about the network. The closest part of it to me (Silverlink, from Richmond through North London to Stratford... a fantastic line when it's going) closes down before 11pm. I know parts of it (overground) run later, but not most of it

I'd say anything with a SE, SW, N, NW or whatever postcode is "in London" for sure. And yes, Zone 3 contains these postcodes. Pretty sure your beloved Richmond has a TW postcode now I think about it.....

But none of that matters. I care not about South versus North arguments.

My point is that there are plenty of places south of the river that are nowhere near a tube stop, but that offer MUCH better accessibility to the West End and the City than places such as have already been mentioned. And also offer much better value for money.

Newcomers to london should be aware that living near a tube is not the be all and end all.

Otherwise they might end up in somewhere like the gun-crime capital of england that is Willesden.......

Go for somewhere near a DLR stop, fantastic line the majority of the time and tends to be less packed (Plus fantastic views on your to work )

I actually wanted to have an exciting part of London to live in. I liked areas like Camden, Kentish Town, Islington, Kilburn, Stoke Newington, Dalston because they had loads of stuff going on in them. While there are areas like those south of the river (Brixton and Clapham for example - although I fucking hate Clapham), they're not in such abundance. If you want somewhere quieter to live then yeah I would say south is a good bet because of the cost and links for the daily commute, but if you want the an abundance of nightlife on your doorstep, or a short nightbus trip away, then North is where its at.

Agreed on west london. Not a fan on the whole. There's some really good deals to be found in East though.

I meant hideous in a broad sense. ie hideous commutes, hideous to get out of london by car, a hideous amount of Australians everywhere you look....(the last point should be the clincher as to why west london is not a good place to live)

going west you're out of London quicker than any other direction (M4 or M40). South, you have the joy of Clapham, to Brixton, to Streatham and on to Purley. East is just as bad if not worse. North... you can get on the M1 or the A1 relatively easily.

Richmond is my favourite part of London. Beautiful walks by the river, Richmond Park, Kew Gardens etc.... can't see what's not to like about it.
