I don't think it is a double standard though. If a band are consistently awful live from the get go, then they won't go very far. But if a band accomplish something great, their dues have been paid enough to come back and do what they want. A small band playing consistently bad shows does nothing for them, but a major band reuniting must have done something right in the first place for people to be excited about a reunion. There is no anticipation when it comes to younger bands.

Gah this Sublime thing. It doesn't matter what their intentions were, who sued who and why. At the end of the day they aren't called Sublime, nothing they've released in called Sublime, and they don't play live under the name Sublime. Same with Queen, they add the extra name in the title to separate themselves from the band. They acknowledge they aren't the same band in the title, which is why I think berating a band for being a band they aren't claiming to be is totally futile and beyond retarded.

So again along as they have a name they can be shit and people will be pleased. If a band is shit live I just don't want to see them ranging from Stone Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers or Never Means Maybe but at least with a new band I don't have to put up with people telling me how great they are despite them being shit.

That is what you call clever marketing (or in Sublime's case a loophole) so stupid people will eat it up thinking it's Sublime when in reality they aren't and see the 1st part of your post, they are now a known brand and don't have to pay any dues relying on a name that isn't theirs yet somehow being a band in their own right. And again I've not been berating the band, I've been berating people stupid enough to think they are Sublime or a band in their own right when in reality they are more like the cover band in the pub who try to sneak a few of their own songs to make you want to buy their cd rather than Sublime or a new band.

But its all about opinion isnt it?

One persons great live act is another persons indifference, dont you agree?

Most of my mates think oasis are the greatest live act ever, I cant think of anything worse. i personally think the likes of radiohead/bjork are fantastic live acts but mates think there beyond awful.

Some people go on about how a band is tight, and just like on record. Fuck sake who wants that, if you just want that sit at home and wack your stereo on.

Surely that backs me up moreso. The fact is they paid their dues, why do they need to keep doing it. They are Sublime (two thirds at least) with the extra factor of 'Rome'. Hence why Rome is singled out in the band name. Those two guys may be using the brand (and why shouldn't they), but are at the same time distancing Rome from it (regardless of lawsuits, which you'll inevitably bring up again). But frankly the band are there playing the songs, to an audience who want to see it. What does it matter if Rome is singing? No one is going to the show thinking Brad has sprung from the grave, everyone knows. In their initial stages the band used the "brand" to sell tickets, but again, it's not like they had nothing to do with it originally. They have every right to perform they songs they helped write. They've done the touring, done the albums, done everything.

I guess we just have very different views on this and I understand where you're coming from. But I still maintain that your 'karaoke covers band' analogy is retarded.

    • Cool, if potentially completely exhausting, idea.
    • We don't have any choice but I don't need a t-shirt for it! 🙂    On the bright side, it gets it out of the way for a nice 5 year run... notwithstanding wars, new contagious diseases and apocalypse.
