i was a casual springsteen fan when i saw am at glasto, and was bored apart form the hits..i got into his older stuff before i saw him at hyde park last year, where apart from sound he was excellent, i think the problem he has is if you dont know the songs he WILL be boring, but i'd imagine alot of very good performers would have this problem, on the flip side i saw flaming lips at glasto again being a casual fan and they were amazing! i would imagine not knowing nick caves catalogue would mean that might be a bit dull too, although i didnt see him..so err, my argument kind of ends there!

Am I the only one that enjoyed Nick Cave then? I can't say I knew all that much about him before but I really enjoyed and it made me go out and buy a fair few of his albums. I'd love to see him again.

Springsteen on the other hand bored the shit out of me, such a massive disappointment!

No, nick cave was excellent. Tony is just being contrary because he's got his knickers in a twist because his beloved bruce springsteen was dung, and made him look silly for championing him in the months leading up the 2009 festival on here.

I'd say you're wrong. I'd say the very best performers can transcend the audience not knowing the songs. It's the very reason I love festivals.

If Bruce can only perform to his fans than he's defo not that great a performer in my book.

you thought Stevie Wonder was sloppy... I have no reference point with you, with what you do and don't like. It doesn't make much 'sense' to me.
my comment about SW wasn't about what I like, it was about his performance - a different thing.

You don't get it because you can't separate those two things yourself I guess.

the point is, bruce springsteen did nothing to convince anyone that he should ever be given a headline slot again, let alone just 3 festivals later.

If he really is this legendary live performer, and his songs really are these amazing things, then he certainly didnt get that across in 2009.

I cant fathom why anyone would want him back so soon. He proved he cannot perform at festivals. Maybe he bottled it I dont know

or maybe he's just a bit shit and overhyped?

fair point, do you think all artists can do this tho? i reckon some may struggle if you dont know any of their catalogue

nope, all definitely can't.

To me that difference is the difference between bad and good.

He's one of favs, but something which always makes me smile are some of the comments I heard from young-20s people when watching David Byrne at Big Chill a few years back - stuff like "who are we watching again? He's really really good".

There's quite a number of bands I've seen over the years who I've got no personal interest in but who I've seen (only because of my efests work) and walked away thinking "they were really good". Far too often they're the bands who have little success, while bands that only do deathly dirge have far bigger careers because of the hype they get.

Stevie Wonder was sloppy? What were you smoking Neil? And can I have some?

Don't think I've ever seen a better band.

I've only got the part I saw to go on - and perhaps it got better - but it certainly wasn't tight for what I saw (which I have a feeling was at the start of the set, but I can't actually remember).
