Just because Efestivals says MCR are being lined up for R+L doesn't necessarily mean they will headline. Or have I missed something?

I'm being told by sources that they're being lined up as headliner - but of course that's only right if the sources are right.

If the announcement was next week I'd believe that's defo right, but with the announcement still 3-ish months away there's all sorts of reasons why it might not be, so while I'm inclined to think it's right because these sources have a good history, it might not be.

Remember that MCR were rumoured headliners last year and they didn't even play! :P

I think they will this year though, but I doubt they'll headline. Imagine the amount of moaning that would occur if they headlined the Sunday at Reading, I think this forum would go into meltdown. They'll be on below a "heavy" headliner IMO, Green Day or someone.

Rumoured? Yes. Something I bet my house on? Nope. :)

What I said was: "And finally, the act we're least sure of but believe are the third headliner are My Chemical Romance.".

I published those words 4 weeks before the announcement, but around two weeks before the announcement I had the real deal nailed down (not that many people believed it ).

I sometimes get to find out that a band was indeed being lined up to play but then didn't because of something or other, and while I've not heard anything like that for MCR at Reading in 2010, there's the possibility that that's what happened.

Is that the same source that told you that they would headline last year, out of interest?

Nope, the sources for next year are different ones.

And actually, there was never too much certainty with that MCR info - which is precisely why what was published was worded as it was (tho with hindsight I should have worded it even weaker than I did). I stated with certainty in the same article that two of the headliners were Blink and AF (which of course were right), but didn't put the same belief in MCR.

You can read that for yourself here:-

Is this the same info thats listed Bon Jovi as Download headliner, cus thats wrong for sure.

Playing Germany Friday and Sunday means they're unlikely t fly in Saturday to headline Download and even if they did, System are headlining that day.

I got a feeling RHCP could be the third Download headliner now the V link has been severed

The names rumoured for Reading/Leeds have come to me from two different sources, both of which have a history of getting info right prior to announcements. That doesn't guarantee they're right with these names, but at a simple level it makes them more likely to be right than wrong, and because the info has come to them from unrelated directions it adds to the likelihood of being accurate.

Having said that, I've no way of knowing if what I've been told is what the festival has 100% firmed up, or whether it's info on what they're hoping to do rather than definitely doing. So it could be the case that these names are as accurate for right now as it's possible to be, but might not be what is announced at announcement time because things have changed between now and the announcement.

Or it could be that they're all entirely wrong. I only really ever get to know how good they are when there's the official announcement - such is the nature of rumours.

The Bon Jovi for Download info came from one of those same sources, but was given to me with far less certainty than the Reading/Leeds names - which is why Bon Jovi was always added to the rumours as just a 'rumour' while the Reading/Leeds names were listed as 'strong rumours'. As I know how the info has been sourced, I know that there's good reasons for why there might be confusion over Bon Jovi, but I don't know if they are the same reasons as to why the source gave me Bon Jovi without the same certainty as I was given the Reading/Leeds names. So, if Bon Jovi turns out to be wrong (and it might well be), that's no reason to also think these Reading/Leeds names are also wrong.

I'm not sure what you mean by out of the blue, I don't think they book a headliner on the basis that no one would be expecting them, they book them because they think they're a big enough band. If you mean out of the blue in the sense that they'd not previously been rumoured you're assuming the festival organisers are i complete control of how the information gets out. If you're assuming that headliners get book for their suprise value we would have some very strange line ups.

It's not so much the value of surprise but Reading does get strange headliners a good few times before like Arcade Fire, Razorlight, Franz Ferdinand blah, blah, blah.

yep, and when they get bands like those - specifically those - the majority of Reading/Leeds goers think they're weak bookings.

You're a contrary lot. :lol::lol:

i may be wrong but i got the hint that damon's thing that gorillaz may not do huge places anymore after this tour defo suggests smaller venues obvs and the possibility of something with blur, however, that was said in january.

wouldn't be surprised with a very short booking time for close announced blur dates

I've said it for a few weeks now I reckon Blur are gonna be a headliner. They've made it clear they don't really want to do loads of touring but a bit of nostalgia and obviously a bit of money for the rest of the band. 2 Gigs in August plus maybe a small London warm up gig would suit the band and festival brilliantly! Please Please Reading get Muse | Strokes | Blur. Thats an incredible set of headliners IMO
