Jamie's 30 minute meals

I know over the years, Jamie Oliver has been widely slagged off, especially on the internet - for his various crusades and his mannerisms and the way he sometimes phrases things etc.

But "Jamies 30 minute meals" is the best cooking programme I have seen in a long long time.

Just about every dish he has made is completely makeable by even the biggest kitchen philistine on the planet, and he stays with you all the way through the cooking process, with only small cuts made here and there for brevity.

If anyone hasnt got the confidence to cook, this programme could change your entire outlook on food, and encourage you to have a go.

Up until saturday AM, I hadnt seen a single episode - but now I have seen them all so far, and have made 2 of the main courses (both of which were awesome) and a couple of his sides.

We (and a lot of our friends who we have spoken to about it) have been getting very bored with our usual rotation of dinners - Stew, spag bol, chili, pork chops, med roasted cod, gammon and egg, cottage pie, curry, rinse repeat ad nauseum. On saturday I made his vegetarian rogan josh, with lemon pickle and carrot salad. yes "vegetarian" (I would never really eat a veggie meal, cos I really like meat) but this curry didnt need meat. Even the kids enjoyed it. And last night I made his simple penne ragu, which again was awesome, flavourful, and very good for you. I did overdo it with the chili, but otherwise it was excellent.

The banoffee pie he made yesterday is getting made to f**k later, as well as his fish "tray bake".

And I really like the way he tells the viewer to "get their meez sorted" (my words not his - its basically "mis en place" - which is the process of getting your work area organised and prepared) before they start.

So wether its for confidence, knowledge, or maybe just a kick up the arse inspirationally, I highly recommend it.

f**k me that sounds like an advert.

They might take 30 minutes, but they sure aint Jamies Cheap Meals. Did you see the one with the 30 minute roast? (stop the sniggering at the back) He must have used about £20 of meat - for what he calls a midweek meal.

And I'm not sure they actually take 30 minutes. Theres quite a bit of editing going on - watch when the camera cuts away when he's mixing something, it cuts to his face or something and all of a sudden its the right consistancy.

That steak sandwich he made did look nice though.

Yeah, I`ve been watchin em--and if nowt else you cant fault his enthusiasm. I agree re cost though (in fact i mentioned this on another thread last night)...these cuts they use must cost a bomb.

last sat morning... Saturday Kitchen... the bloke used this huge f**k off side of lamb baked in a salt crust... would cost a fortune.

My 1st thought about Jamies 30mins though was that yer average person would take at least twice that long...it takes me 40mins to do me meeeze from previous cookins!

I was taken with the indian he did... and that lemon pickle did look cool.

There is a mass of these programmes on now isn`t there... i like nearly all of em, but cant get away with The Hairy Bikers and Blumen.

The Huge Breasted Chancellors Half Greek Daughter is now getting on me wick mind. Every other sentence has some innuendo..and I`d say she`s eating everything she makes..she must have put 3 clem on since the last series.

I do like Hugh Thingy Thinginstall..didnt used to...but i like his style.

My fav though is Nigel Slater who is bent as wire with his presentation but he is so passionate. In fact I have a 30 Minute Book of his which is prob better that The Short-Tongued Southerners.

Delia should knock it on the head now mind..on TV at least--her neck looks like a kebeb triangle on the spit.

I've not managed to catch this series so far as its on when I'm at work but I've always been a fan of his other programmes. Got loads of his books at home and have always found his recipes to be relatively easy and tasty. Will need to look this one up 4OD

Gotta say, been watching this program and it has given me the motivation to cook.

Tried a couple of his dishes and that got me really excited to start trying new things.

Last night i made my first sweet and sour sauce from scratch and served it over halibut with rice. Tonight i am making roast rack of lamb with crushed anya potatoes.

I have never really been in to cooking before at all.....so its all interesting for me right now

rollergirl is the expert in this house, am 99% sure she ain't watched it back to make the stuff though.

She's done the oozy mushroom risotto, beef joint with yorkies.. and one other meal I think.

I'll get her to check this thread, she's out tonight so having to cook for myself

frozen chargrilled chicken breasts and frozen potato wedges

    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
