Ah yes but surely the artist that makes the effort to reinvent themselves is the one that is going to appeal to the masses over the years? Like I say, I truly am no Madonna fan, the woman irritates the hell out of me, but I'd rather see her live than U2 performing the same old same old who have never changed their genre, so to me, each of their albums just pretty much sounds the same.

And isn't Glasto meant to be all about the different musical styles available to everybody?

Anyway, I think my general point I was trying to get across is that just because we don't all like certain artists/bands it's just stupid to slate them for it. They are all successful in their own way, whether it be on singer/songwriter credibility or a huge unstoppable pop machine, I sometimes think if you just embrace them, give them a go without any pre-conceived ideas, sometimes you might actually be shocked, as I was when I was dragged to see Madonna live and indeed recently Paloma Faith.

I remember watching clips of her at Radio1's Big Weekend. Now, I'm sure that she'd put a bit more effort in for Glasto.. but she was fairly awful at that. I would very probably be elsewhere and really not bothered if she was the headliner.

Who would never have had a multi-million selling album and a production career with many of the biggest pop acts of the time if it weren't for Madonna.

Call Madonna a leech if you like but I'm sure William Orbit isn't complaining about the way his career went after he worked with her.

Mad Donna picked Orbit as her producer because he was the hottest producer around at the time, in the exact same way as she picked her other producers for her albums right thru the years.

in the fine and true music snobbery tradition expressed on this thread, I want to say that Ray of Light, as well as Music and Confessions On a Dance Floor are actually decent albums, an artistic maturation from the kiddie bubble gum pop she produced and made millions from before that, and which I mostly can't stand. It's also a credit to the UK that those records were far better received there, than in the US (particularly Ray of Light) where the ongoing theme is that Madonna has been crap since she put a bit of thought into an album, and also started speaking in a horrible attempt at a fake english accent.

But, just from those 3 albums alone she has far more credibility to grace the pyramid stage than Kylie. Disclaimer - i am not calling for a Madonna appearance. I would view it as a horrible waste of money/a high pyramid slot, that could go to someone else...
