Fair dos, your opinion. Personally I'd say he was great in his peak United years when his productivity was outstanding. 98/99 (treble) he got something like 9 goals, 24 assists. He'd get you double figures for goals most years and in the region of 20 assists.

Who cares if he didn't have fancy tricks to beat a man, when he could find space as he did and beat 3-4 men with a defence splitting cross.

Wouldn't make my top 5 Fergie players and had his limitations, but not sure people can beat him by saying wasn't as good as Giggs and Scholes, both of who were/are outstanding. Iniesta's not as good as Xavi and Messi but still pretty special.

how good is messi with his head? i think it's unfair to pick at little points like that to say beckhams not great. especially for a right winger where heading is about as important as shooting is for a defender.

no one is saying beckham is on a par with zidane or messi or any of this bunch. think my definition of great is probably not far off your definition of good.

I think the point is that whilst (IYO) what I have mentioned as minus points aren't very big to you, there are lots of them. Ivanisevic had a brilliant serve. Far superior to Nadal's. Which player is the great?

that's excluding assists from indirects aswell, where he was good for 4-5 or so a season aswell. Weren't many deadball specialists close to him at the time imo; Juninho Pernambucano, Mihajlovic, Pirlo possibly.

Thats about 4 a season?? Its good but considering the british media have constantly given him the "best in the world" tag, I have no doubts many other players worldwide had similar strike rates. He was defintely one of the best in the premiership, but most of the people I have heard give him the best tag, probably werent watching that much non premiership games. I agree the names you mention are also good free kick takers, however you are discussing the best free kick takers playing for big european clubs. While I think you assume the best player in the world plays for a top european club, I dont think it necesarly follows that the best free kick taker does. I have no doubt that there are players in south america just as good who never play in europe. Just shows how silly yhe "best in the world" tag is int his situation!

The thing is I cant remember any of our media ever saying juninhio was the best. I cant remember a name other than becks being named. As I Have said its a stupid claim. Disagree about the south america argument. They have some great dead ball players who would score past keepers whether they are european, african or american. In fact brazil have produced keepers as good if not better than england in recent years. My main point is that I dont understand that anything becks is good at, the media seem to exaggerate the skill and make silly claims. I cant remember them doing the same for any other player in my lifetime. He was a very good player in his time, but the amount of things it is claimed he is one of the best ever at, you would think he was zidane!

Not only have I heard him called the best in the world at free kicks and corners. He is the hardest working footballer in the world, the best trainer and also the most committed player. Your question about south america demonstrates my point. I havent got a clue which players were scoring lots of free kicks in brazil during becks generation or now. However im not naive to the fact that there are very skillfull players in brazil, who may never play for brazil or leave the country. Just because they are not famous in the uk doesn mean they cant take a free kick as well as someone who does. If these media people said he was the best free kick taker in the premiership player during his peak, I Have no problem with this, as they know the league. However the people who call him the best in the world, generally wouldn have a clue about the best free kick takers in france, holland, portugal or brazil. So are no more qualified than me to start talking about the best in the world.

Yeah, but you're a Man Utd fan (a synonym for being extremely biased).

He was good, but his product value has been more about his marketable image than any skill. Him still being involved in football owes far more to his marketable image than his footballing pedigree. Take away his product value of selling anything he touches and he's just a sad old hasbeen embarrassingly trying to extend his career well beyond its sell-by date.

Incidentally, David Beckham is single handedly responsible for the rise of the metro-sexual, which has sold billions of identities and products throughout the world, including but not limited to the recent change in James Bond's image. What comparative impact has he had for football? Nothing.
