Not saying whether we've made a bid or not, but you can buy someone now, just not register them.

I know that in theory you can, but how much actual standing in law would it have? It'd be a bit like buying a car without having the log book (registration doc) but without benefit that possession of that car would give you. Trying to prove the actual sale would be difficult even with paperwork that said a sale had been made - paperwork can be faked.

If the selling club refused to release the player's registration in the summer then things would get very messy at best. Whereas if the sale is made along with the release/transfer of player's registration then everything is beyond dispute.

And surely in the eyes of FIFA/EUFA/the FA, it's the registration that proves the ownership?

Not how it works. As Comolli was saying the other day clubs work summer to summer trying to get things going throughout the season. Although no move is finalised until the summer clubs are constantly trying things during the season. This would be especially relevant for things like United's GK. They'd be stupid to risk waiting when until the summer when it has been clear for months VDS is retiring.

I can see the benefits of preliminary discussions for the transfer of younger players or players towards the ends of their careers to all but the biggest/most-attractive (to players) clubs, but even with those it doesn't seem to be the case that absolutely solid sales agreements get made outside of the windows.

But I can't see things working as well or as smoothly when there's one of the 'big' clubs involved. To my mind there's too much opportunity for game playing by the selling club, which is only likely to hike up the price for the buying club.

And when it's a situation as it is with Utd where everyone knows that they need a goalie then I see that game playing as even more likely. I'd have thought Utd would be looking and deciding who they'd go for, and perhaps even make a private agreement with the player, but I can't see what advantage there is to go in with guns blazing towards the selling club at this point when it'd be better to keep the powder dry and only shoot when you really mean it (when the window is open).

Isn't it the case with all of these that the sales are outside of the playing season for the countries they're playing in (I'm pretty sure that was the case with Lindegaard, at least)?

That puts their windows in different places, and doesn't make them signings outside the window as such, does it?

Why are people using the very good u21 german team that heavily influenced germany 2010 as a reason why wilshire should play in the u21 tournament. None of those german players had every represented germany before that u21 tournament, so i dont see how its a proper comparison. In my opinion once there are signs that you are likely to be regularly starting for the main international team, there is nothing to be gained from dropping down.

Yeah big potential banana skin tomorrow for Utd. A lot of international players back from Brazil, Mexico etc. Also, Chelski in the CL next week too, they may have that in mind. All good for Arsenal. I hope Im proved wrong, but Utd just don't have the squad this year to compete on all three fronts.
