gotta say, a brilliant performance from Spurs.

They outplayed them with great football in the first half, and I was thinking "it's great play, but if they keep playing this way they're being a little naive, and Milan are likely to beat them with gamesmanship later in the game". But they came out for the 2nd half a wiser team, and took them on at their own game and beat them. I guess that's down to 'Arry's half-time talk.

It was dead funny seeing Gattuso getting more and more and more riled, and even the likes of Crouch (not someone I've ever thought of a 'tough' player) winding him up brilliantly. I can't believe that he got a yellow as late as he did, and I can't believe he was still on the field at the end of the match.

So I'd guess that the council are having to fend off locals objections at an even greater number of people coming and going, and the obligations they want to put on you are aimed at striking what they - and more importantly the locals - will accept as a reasonable balance for the hassle.

Wish is a load of old twaddle. The ground has been there long before probably 95% of the local residents. Plus the increase to 55,000 isn't unusual - Tottenham used to regularly get crowds of over 60,000, and for big games over 70,000.

The local authorities are just trying to use the redevelopment to get some freebies off the club. Just like Newham did off WHU when we built the Rio stand and had to pay for upgrades to UP station. I don't blame the authorities for trying it on, but they've gone too far IMO.

Now, I'll have to stop, defending the yids is getting me out in a rash.

Turnover rose to £65.3 million, but operating expenses are now at £96.9 million.

Tycoon owner Ellis Short is continuing to bankroll Sunderland after the latest club accounts revealed annual losses increasing to £26 million.

Sunderland are having a crack at breaking into the top ten this season with a wage bill that has risen to £53.69 million - a whopping 82 per cent of turnover.

The club accounts signed off last week for the year to July 31, 2010, say that the club "is deemed to be a going concern because of the ongoing support of the immediate parent company Sunderland Limited," which is owned by Short.

Last night Sunderland chief executive Steve Walton admitted they were facing "challenging economic times both nationally and regionally" with the club continuing to develop with "significant" investment in new players.

Sunderland make £38.8 million from television income, but £12.6m from gate receipts, down by £1.2 million on 2009. Sponsorship revenue (£7.86 million), conference and banqueting (£3.8million) and retail income (£1.9 million) all fell.Part of the role of new director, ex-foreign secretary David Milliband is to increase the club's profile abroad and help lever in extra money from foreign fans and companies.

Chairman Niall Quinn has also launched a crusade to get fans watching "illegal" broadcasts in the pub, back to the stadium.

Sunderland's bank overdraft has increased to £10.4 million from £6.3 million.

After the accounts were closed, Sunderland sold Kenwyne Jones, Marton Fulop and Martyn Waghorn, and bought Asamoah Gyan, deals which largely balance up in terms of fees and wages.

Sunderland explained last night that their operating expenses reflected the investment in ten additional players added to the squad on a permanent basis and three loan signings, during three transfer windows covered.

Short has also converted loans of £19 million into shares in the business.

Chief executive Steve Walton said: "We are facing challenging economic times, both nationally and regionally, however our financial results do continue to reflect a continued period of growth and development for the club.

"There has been significant investment made to improve our playing squad and we are now starting to see the benefits of that investment. The continuing support of our owner also puts the club in a secure position, giving us a positive platform to continue to build on."

after last nights game descended into a game of, if you cant beat em, kick em, who else is looking forward to what's sure to a be feast of footballing excellence tonight?

can ARSEnal do it? and if so, how? do they defend high up the pitch, trying to stop barca at source, or defend deep, and hit them on the break with wallcott and van persie as their finishers?

its an intriguing game, but i certainly think that ARSEnal can improve on last years aggregate 6-3, but whether they have the tools to turn them over, i dont know.

I made a point around this in what I posted, and I'm in agreement with what you say here.

But that doesn't stop those locals being pissed off all the same. Just about anyone can be a NIMBY.

It's pretty obvious that any authority will try it on - they do no different with new housing, or a new tesco, or whatever.

But it's still the case that the locals who elect them will have expectations of their council to represent their interests, and the locals in this case might be (I don't know) demanding of their council that they get all the things they're asking for in exchange for the new stadium.

Things like this will become much more common in coming years, with the proposed changes to the planning laws.

well, logic says Arsenal will lose - but it's always the case that individual games can go against that, so you never know.

If Barca start in the same way they did last time then I can't see Arsenal being as lucky as they were then in keeping out the goals.

But Arsenal are a better and stronger team than they were the last time, so it's perhaps the case that they won't be quite so dominated.
