I too have worked festivals and seen a fair few of them come crashing back to earth in a ball of fire.

Back when TOS used to have forums, a mass launch event was organized. GFL requested people to not do this, the thread got locked, and they said they'd take action to prevent it (security I would presume).

If one sets fire to the King's Oak in the Sacred Space I think a lynch mob may amass - which wouldn't be very Glasto.

Wow - Virtual Festivals !! My Fests !! I'd forgotten about them . I used to look in on those as much as efestivals before the 2007 glastonbury. Just had a look now and they only appear to get 2 posts a week - how the mighty have fallen

I am guessing though that even after reading that some folk will just go ahead anyway justifying their actions somehow. Probably the same way some folk justify leaving tents etc behind.

Well, I want to congratulate QuackCandle for ambition and spirit, and a willingness to contribute to the vibe. It would be really cool to see all those lanterns go off.

But, at the same time, I agree it's unfortunately not at all wise, so it shouldn't be done. Sorry.

I was just talking with my eldest about this. I sometimes feel sorry for newbies that post something in the hope that it will be all fluffy and lovely, and it turns sour. It must feel the same as going to give your Grandad a hug and a kiss night night only for him to try to bugger you.

As it happens had a BBQ at the weekend and a mate of mine bought some sky lanterns along.

Mate said he got the more expensive ones. Said on the box "high quality" "safe" "20 mins minimum burn time"

So we lit one and soon enough off it lifted...DRIPPING BURNING FUEL FROM THE FUEL BLOCK !!!! You could see red hot drips falling from the sky. Lasted about 5 mins in the air before we saw it burn out a couple of hundred yards away.

We had a box of ten but only lit the one thank god. Rest are now in the bin.

Thankfully it is only fields at the back of my place and no damage was done.

If some knobheads at Glasto decided to light 50 of the type we had at the stone circle then without doubt many tents/people would be burned by dripping fuel.

OP: PLEASE, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR SKY LANTERNS AT HOME THIS GLASTONBURY. (preferably in the bin)

How about tying them all together to form a huge smiley face, then using wire to attach to a strongly fixed peg in the ground. Light them and hey presto: big firey smiley kite!

I also agree not safe for use. I've seen one land in among tents and seen rapid panic ensue...there are good reasons they are on the banned list.

Yes they look great but safe no. There is a funnier point to all this though, watching the security trying to catch the things and put them out with their hands, pure dedication I say!!

Hey Everyone,

I'm determined to be part of the festival this year rather than just experience it like I have the previous four. I've come up with a small but satisfying and highly poignant plan:

I've bought 50 sky lanterns to set off at 10:30 pm on Thursday at the Stone Circle (before the festival gets really crazy). There should be a couple of friends with me so with the excess we plan to hand out to strangers, we'll try and orchestrate a simultaneous lighting and release of them.

If you want to get involved please please do, I think it could be a really special moment for everyone across the site. I can imagine from any point of the festival site over 50 of them just appearing, It'd make me stop, point and even cheer!

For those who are in a fortunate position to contribute financially so we can buy more, pm me (this isn't a con, I'd be happy to provide you with a receipt; cheeky request I know!)

What does everyone think of the idea, would you be interested in joining in with the release of the lanterns?

can you juggle, diablo, sing, play guitar? or anything else that you can do at the stone circle to put a smile on people's faces?

the glastonbury santa club give out gifts to random strangers.

fancy dress is always good to see.

there's a thread on here about people who give toilets a makeover so they are actually nice.

you can offer to carry my bags!
