I would love Orbital to play. Missed the chance to see then in Manchester so for them to confirm I would be over the moon! Great music. So moving and beautiful

Around this time last year that they were announced for The Big Chill. & hence that they were reforming. So pen could be put to paper soon/now, alas IIRR in 2004 their presence wasn't worked out until very late, something like May.

They are not, for the record, entitled to play opposite U2.

Well I've seen bits of Orbital twice.

First time was at T in the Park where they were 2nd top on what is T's 3rd stage. The 2nd time(last year)they headlined the 2nd stage at Rockness, remembering that Rockness's mainstage is headlined by acts that would headline the Other Stage(The Prodigy).

To me, Glastonbury being the top dog of UK festivals(if not the world)it should easily be able to match or even better the likes of Rockness?

Whatever the Orbital boys did say, I'm sure it probably had a lot to do with feeling slightly awkward that having effectively said "fairwell" at Glasto in 2004 (and yes, I know that a couple of gigs followed this), they would've be back a mere 5 years later had they confirmed for 2009. They've never hidden their love for the festival and Mr Eavis has always asked them back.

Not sure why anyone would suggest they couldn't fill a headline slot - they've headlined the Other stage twice, the Jazz stage once (and drew a crowd only rivalled by Rolf at this years festival, emptying fields for miles around) and easily took on the second-to-top billing on the Pyramid stage Saturday night in '95 (and scared the living poo out of the about-to-headline Pulp if Jarvis' comments are to be believed!)

I just saw them (twice) at Manchester Academy this year and they were on ROCKING form - lots of improvisation to the material and re-worked songs galore (Out There Somewhere?, Crime, THE MOBIUS!).

Sure there are a couple of tunes that could probably be dropped for over familiarity, but a festival crowd wants the 'hits' anyway...

.....and they won't do Glastonbury because its too commercial and has lost it's soul.

I hope they play, but as I've said before elsewhere, I struggle with the hypocrisy of releasing a "Live at Glastonbury" CD and DVD, saying Glasto is too commercial, and then playing a load of commercial festivals.

When the boys played Rockness this summer it was only their second appearance since buggering off 5 years ago. The first appearance was the Wednesday before in Brighton and compared to the later gigs of this summer, was ok but not great so maybe that is why the OP said what he did about the Rockness gig. BUT...

The comeback has been brilliant and surprising. At the various shows I have caught them at this summer the audience was a real mix. Die hard fans (and at every show at least a couple of Loopz forum folk at the front - and at other times bloody loads of us!), folks who caught them a few times over the previous 15 years of performances and then those who never got round to seeing them before the split and realising/knowing they had missed out in the past. Most were was blown away and there were thousands of very happy bunnies out there this summer.

The love for this group is still very strong, their heyday may have past but a late evening slot at the Jazz, Pyramid or Second Stage would still draw a fookin enormous crowd. Of course the setlist is nothing but old tunes but bloody hell do those guys know how to re-work their classics! The sets got better and better as the summer went on...can't wait to see what they might pull out of the bag for next year (if they decide they are sticking around!)

I'm sitting and waiting in anticipation for the final Brixton 09 show to come my way very soon...awesome show!

Aye they were class at newcastle in september. I had never seen them up to that point but my dad had seen them loads and he said it was one of the best gigs they did.

How crowded (or not) were those two?

I see what you're saying re Glasto getting bigger acts to headline 2nd stage, especially this year of the 40th, but I think there's also a higher percentage of Glasto-goers who traditionally turn up for Orbital's set there.

They're also announced today to be headlining Isle of Wight's 2nd stage. However big that is. Which is a curiosity, really don;t see them as an IOW act.
