Just thought I'd add this. We went out foraging in Northumberland National Park today and people had obviously been camped out where we parked up. Hate to see the state of their camp at a festival.

Checked and double checked we hadn't left anything lying around (especially things like cigarette butts and wet wipes, which sometimes go astray - even though my hubby was suffering crippling stomach cramps and got carted off by medics Mon am (what a nightmare that was...!) I just have a lot of respect for the countryside and hate to see things left that shouldn't be there....Always depresses me leaving Glasto and seeing all the mess

KYJenni (a regular poster) felt similarly about the festival after this year, and has set up her own company Respect Your Festival (http://www.######/), with one of the aims being to encourage people to clean up after themselves, not just at Glastonbury but at a range of UK Festivals.

She is being pro-active, and I am sure plenty of others will similarly be pro-active.

Therefore it appears that someone at Efestivals views Respect Your Festival as competition, and is using this rarely applied rule to prevent this. I don't think that Respect Your Festival is in competition with Efestivals, after all it is a very different concept, one which focuses on making festivals cleaner and friendlier, rather than the promotion and reviews of festivals.

Except there's reviews of festivals there. But anyway, had Jenni played things straight rather than saying one thing while doing another, then these things might not have happened. But anyway, RYF is doing nothing that eFestivals doesn't - aside from eFestivals having wages to pay to staff, who rightly expect their wages.

I'm not the biggest environmentalist in the world, but we took good care this year as the year before to make sure all our rubbish was in bags, and left by the bins, and sorted for recycling.

It's just a common courtesy thing really, as the land doesn't belong to me and I have been allowed to stay there, so I should take good care of it.

I must confess, I left my tent in 2007, but I have mitigating circumstances. After 11 festivals, it finally gave in to all the rain that year, all my stuff was wet from the roof going overnight, the place had turned into the Somme, I was of the mistaken opinion that tents were going to be taken to Sudan (or rather had misunderstood the method of handing tents over for said purpose) and I made up for it by helping people in the slog out of the car park.

I made sure I invested in a new tent that has been to many fests since!

Although eFestivals might have similar messages, they are less well published (I've just had a search and couldn't find them at all).

So constant references to "Love the farm, leave no trace" pass you by. As they do very many people. Trying to push it very hard in people's faces has not greater effect.

Anyhow, this website has been pushing these messages for years - in fact, long before the festival itself was. Such messages only effect those who want to be effected by them. As can be seen on these forums and by the state of various festivals, many people don't want to be.

As an aside - any smokers recommend a portable ashtray at all? I fancy something I can hang off my bag so I have easy access to it all the time but obviously I don't want it to leak - or stink. Any ideas you lovely lot? Hate the idea of some poor cow yomping down on my dog ends

I got handed a 35mm film case for my butts once by a girl from the green police who saw me having a fag. Was actually really grateful for it, as had been just pocketing them before that. She seemed really surprised for both my gratitude and the fact i'd not been throwing them away before.

But yeah, a film case does the trick perfectly.

I've used one of these for the last year - works really well - doesn't fall open in your pocket - and anyway you can wear it outside your pockets thank to the keyring bit.

Preaching to the converted, we always leave our camp spotless! 2009 was an improvement overall, but still bad.

Best I've seen was Big Chill 2006 - the whole valley camping area was spotless, a grand effort from everyone. Sadly it went downhill in the next few years.

I was thinking about this. Y'see a lot who leave things on the farm get slated, and in the main, rightly so.

However, there are people who leave stuff on site, say for example they've got a irrepairable and mud-coated tent/chair/etc that cant be used again, and it just doesnt make sense to cart it all the way back home to dispose of it. I have friends who left a tent one year for this reason and they felt guilty.

I think it might be a decent idea to let them know that as they leave they can/should pay a 'guilt-tax' on their way out so that if youve not 'left-no-trace' you can at least chuck a few quid in a collection bin to contribute to the cleanup/wateraid. Maybe with a price-list of what they 'should' pay for what they've left for any minor enviro-misdemeanours over the weekend.

Probably wouldnt raise loads, but every quid helps.

bagged and left by the bins, our "site" is lefft how we found it, except the grass is flatter. split the cardboard, plastic etc into separate bags too.
