I don't think there's much doubt it will be shown somewhere. If the impetus doesn't come from ME, it would instead come from the Police or Mendip Council.

From a capacity point of view, the idea that it "has" to be the Pyramid isn't true. The space above the Park and Pennard Hill conbined is roughly the same size as the Pyramid, and has a better rake to boot.

What would however make the Pyramid more attractive is that the infrastructure will be there by default. Not just the screens, but the toilets. Up at the Park, there would need to be several hundred more loos added, to minimise the hit on the neighbouring watercourses.

People have also mentioned the old cinema field. It is only half the size of the Pyramid however, and for that to be used it means shunting hospitality elsewhere - which means shuffling other things around on site to cope with that.

So logistically, the Pyramid still wins, but that has its difficulties - not least of which would be, I suspect, a reluctance on the part of the organisers to let the football take centre stage at such key time.

Tough call. I really can't guess what the answer is going to be.

The only thing I'd put money on is that it will be shown somewhere.

Seriously, where are they all going to and how are they getting there? Your local - how many extra people would you fit in it than normally watch the football? So, say, 20,000 people leave site to watch the footy - how many pubs does it take to accommodate them? Say they go 4 in a car - where are you parking 5,000 cars at these pubs? Say they go on the bus - how many buses do you need? 100? Where are you getting them from?

I think that's the point many are making. Nowhere could accomodate those sort of numbers. The authorities will know that and so showing the matches at Glastonbury is almost a necessity.

I think they will show the football for sure should we qualify from the group..which given the draw looks a high possibility.

People on here can say they shouldn't all they want, but the bottom line is that England matches, partiucally in a World Cup and at knockout stage will reach fever pitch.

Even if we were to get Serbia in the 2nd round the demand to watch it will be high....27 million people watched the Argentina 2nd round game in 1998...and if we were to get Germany that's just about the only match that would top it.

The Slovenia game, would I guess be shown no problems....but that will then lead to an influx of people wanting to come earlier than usual on the Weds am...to be on site, parked up, camped up and in front of the Pyramid stage ready for the 3pm kick off is going to be a tall order for so many people...maybe ME should consider not only letting the car parks open on the Tuesday Night but also the gates to the campsites as well?

I can appreciate some people not wanting to watch England play instead of a band, but you've got to realise that most poeple that post on here are festival enthusists over other hobbies/interests, so they are naturally going to sway that way.

I'm going with 30 odd people this year...out of which only 5 or 6 of us are big football fans who follow teams and go to matches. But i'd say that virtually all of the 25 who don't always come to the pub with us to watch England tournament matches and this will be the same for everyone else.

The ideal senario would be to have two bands as back up, lets say Band A and Band B.

Band A are approached to play the festival, ME or whoever says "We need you to play wherever England don't" so that's either a Saturday night 2nd top slot or sunday late afternoon.

The match will kick off at 7.30pm so if resolved at worst by extra time and penalties it will all be done and dusted by 10pm leaving the Rolling Stones or whoever to play a 2 hr set from 10:30pm onwards.

(Although would that mean knocking out two bands for the duration?)

Band B are approached (perhaps an upcoming band that have played elsewhere that weekend) "we may need to you play the the pyramid stage on sunday afternoon should england get knocked out of the world cup"

Again like above...match on at 3pm, finihsed by 5pm unless ET and penalties which case it would be 5.30pm.

It's a tough on I agree, but the chaos if the football isn't shown, with people either trying to find places that have it on , on site and off would be too much for the festival to handle.

Something has been really cleverly marketed over the last 20 years, cos as a football fan in the 80s, it was pretty much a minority thing, you were villified and left out on your own from the mainstream. I'm speaking from experience here. It used to be pretty hard to find a pub even to watch internationals in, and there was no guarantee of boozers showing games, let alone a f**king festival.

The makeover that Sky has given football since the early 90s is f**king extraordinary, and the way it's been adopted by people is fascinating.

There should be one of two possible outcomes: -

1) They announce well in advance that there will be no football on at Glastonbury. If you want to watch it, don't go. There are plenty of people who want to get a ticket in the resale

2) Put the old cinema field back in and show it there and maybe somewhere else. Leave the Pyramid alone, showing the football will completely destroy the flow of the day on the Main Stage at a Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts. It's the fortieth anniversary and it means losing two potentially great acts.

And I say that as someone who's been into football since I can remember (1983) and is a veteran of over 300 Man United games at home, Away and Abroad, plus a fair few visits to other clubs. Football is 'essential' when you're at home or in the pub, but not at a festival. If it's on and they find a way to keep everyone happy, great, but it shouldn't be an assumption.

Do you really think that will be enough? Or will people just try to get off the site? (We're talking about the general crowd rather than hard core festival goers, which at the moment is probably at fever pitch). I reckon you would still have a fair few people attempt this

I do not think vast numbers would leave the site just due to the pain in the bum of leaving, driving to a pub and finding the pub is already full. Add in the possibility of a long queue in the baking hot heat the best option if the match is not officially being shown (some stalls will be showing the match) is to take a radio and listen in. On the idea of shuting the gates this would worry me as it might be a problem if you need to get off site quickly.
