we both seem to love sziget and glasto for the same reasons, how do you think i’d resonate with the camping stuff at roskilde compared to the two?

Thats the only temptation with Sziget and why i looked ages ago but lineups have regressed since then and to some extent the lineup is going to matter when its that far away especially

It's a fun festival that feels like a hybrid of Glastonbury with Reading Festival with Roadburn. Tons of variety in acts from big recent pop acts (Charli XCX) to metal (Nine Inch Nails) to obscure weird underground stuff. One day I saw The Armed -> Janelle Monae -> Converge -> The Cure -> Behemoth -> Cypress Hill in a row. They also have alot of 'world music' playing throughout the festival. Some of my favourite times  have been a few hours inbetween known acts and just wandering between the stages and discovering new things. If you like going to a festival that is mostly one genre (ie: rock and metal so go to Download) it might not be the best place to go.

 

Unlike UK festivals, they tend to have alot of music on after the main headliner. Late night headliners sometime starting at like 3am.

 

The festival is seen as a 'right of passage' to Danes and has alot of different ages attending. Although recent years skews more towards the younger teenager side. I've never stayed in the campsite (always got the train back and forth between Copenhagen and Roskilde each day) but it looks alot like the chaos of Reading & Leeds.

 

It's really difficult to predict the lineup, but I'd guess they have the likes of The Cure, Sabrina Carpenter, Gorillaz, Massive Attack playing. They usually book some flash in the pan headliner who will bomb (such as Ice Spice and Lil Nas X a few years ago) and also some local Danish hip hop artist (by some boring artist name like 'Tessa' or 'Gilli') who the local kids will love but no one else knows.

* how usually is the weather this time? 

* how crowded is the festival? toilet and bar queues, stages movement..

* are there indoor stages?

* saw the options are to buy full 8 days combi, two days or single day. is it always like that or you can expect to have only main festival 4 days tickets though I think price is quite fair if you have 4-5 good acts per 4 days

* if I don't want to camp will it be better to stay there or is it possible to stay in Copenhagen and travel each day (probably 4 not the full 8 days)

 

anything else you can add will be great.

I've been to the past seven editions so can help answer these.

• Weather is pretty unpredictable. Usually it's a mix of some sunny days with some rainy days and temperatures around 25C. Have also attended editions with more extreme weather, from raining the entire week to a heatwave hitting the festival. I guess overall it's similar to UK festivals.
• This festival draws a large crowd, easily over 100k. It is extremely well managed though, never had issues with overcrowding or extremely long queues for anything. In the past years there were issues with the Apollo stage having a fixed capacity and many people not being able to get in for the more popular concerts. This stage is not returning next year though.
• Yes most stages are in tents or covered, the smallest stage (Gloria) is entirely indoors in a permanent building. The main stage (Orange) is outdoors and may get muddy if there's a lot of rain.
• These will be all the ticket options, they've never sold a ticket exclusively for only the four days of music or the four opening days. Two-day tickets were new this year.
• Yes this is easy. On the opening days it is possible to get back to Copenhagen from the festival by train until 1am or so, on the music days there are direct buses to Copenhagen central station until well after the last concert finishes. Plenty of people don't camp at all, or spend a few nights over the course of the week at home or in a hotel in Copenhagen.

love the mix in geners and though I'm considering Copenhell too would love to see some acts like Amenra, Electric Callboy, Jinjer and more played this year

The Arena tent itself fills up during busy concerts, but it's not walled in. You'd still be able to see and hear from outside the tent.

When are we thinking the next announcement is, and based on what's being annonced elsewhere, what do people think we'll get when the next announcement drops?

Usually end of the month. I think there's a tendency to releasing on Thursdays. So, Thursday next week?

 

I could see some overlap with Down the Rabbit Hole, like David Byrne and Little Simz. Perhaps Loyle Carner and Oklou. I'd take Beirut and Apparat too, from that announcement.

 

And then a bunch of artists noone heard of 🙂

does David Byrne at DTRH not make him less likely now? He's already playing Opener on the 1st... I guess it'll depend on whether he plays Werchter. If so, I doubt he's playing 4 festivals in 5 days at 70+years-of-age....

Yeah, that's a good point. He's just a perfect fit for Roskilde - genre-hopping legend, as he is. Played the festival in 2018, so there's some history. And he's already playing Belgium in February (which could rule out Werchter) and has no Scandinavian dates, as far as I can tell.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for that — he's pretty much the act I'm holding out for before buying my Roskilde ticket and coming to Denmark for the first time! So I guess this gives me more hope now 🙂

None of them really fit. Roskilde likes their headliners more of-the-moment and hip. Or pure legends. (Or anything Damon Albarn). Moby and Kravitz are probably too much of nostalgia acts today. Actually, I wouldn't mind a nostalgia show with Kravitz, I was a huge fan as a teen 😊

 

I'm not particularly familiar with Billy Talent, but I don't think they have much of an audience over here.

No David Byrne at Rock Werchter yet... Making him more likely for Roskilde I feel, with him also playing DTRH on the sunday... Few I'd take from Werchter though, namely the XX, Pixies, Roye Otis, TLDP and Kneecap, who are always fun!

With The Cure and Gorillaz as headliners would imagine that's the fill for 'guitar' top bands. Remaining 2 will probably be one hip hop (Tyler, The Creator?) and one female pop (Gaga? Dua Lipa?)

Who would you guess that rules out then?

 

I think there's plenty of room for more guitar bands.. In previous years they've had a good mix and aside from the XX, I don;t think any I've mentioned would be headline material for Roskilde..

Still more guitar bands will appear in high up slots like this year with Fontaines subbing Charli and Deftones/NIN headlining the Arena tent. Just not expecting the likes of Foos to be added as another headliner; Roskilde usually has a spread in the very top slots.

 

In terms of acts ruled out, anyone playing another Danish festival is not available; which means no Lorde, XX, Turnstile, Amyl & Sniffers, Bring Me The Horizon, Nick Cave, Jamiroquai, Pitbull, The Offspring, Lewis Capaldi or Robbie Williams.

 

Leads me to think the remaining bigger acts haven't announced dates yet or are have some dates in europe but not finished announcing (such as Linkin Park, Yungblud, Twenty One Pilots etc)

also curious which guitar acts will be added as this is what I mostly looking for and as per check this year lineup had some really nice acts

is there a law restricting atcs from playing more than one festival? Would seem very restrictive if so.. I though that usually only paplies to headliners but could be wrong...
