Either him or Graham Potter according to one article I read. So with Southgate saying he's planning a year off and might not return to coaching at all, that presumably would've made Potter his Plan A.

 

We can assume if he'd got his way that he'd have to take the flak given Potter's reputation as a failure with big budgets after what happened at Chelsea.

If his only idea were Southgate and Potter it’s probably a lucky escape by Man Utd. The biggest mistake was appointing him in the first place. I get the impression Ashworth is a bit overhyped.

I'm not sure what to make of his time with Newcastle. It's difficult to know who it was in 2022 he was involved in but the rumour is he pushed hard for Sandro Tonali, which I'm not sure has worked for us just yet - not just because of the gambling ban, which was unfortunate, but because I think we were looking for more of a CDM and instead just signed someone that does the same things as Bruno Guimaraes. Though consensus is a lot of his signings ended up in the youth team.

 

Naturally we're not going to sympathetic given the cloud of stink he kicked up to get out of Newcastle. Which is why I doubt a rumour of Man United trying to replace him with our new Director of Football Paul Mitchell.

 

Southgate could be a hangover given his big start was in the FA's ecosystem, though like I said, he wants a break after leaving the England job and is considering not returning to frontline coaching at all.

I'm still bemused by the 2030 World Cup and how exactly a format of Spain, Portugal and Morocco co-hosting with Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay getting one game each is going to be anything other than a total mess.

 

I'm aware this was part of the gymnastics to give Gianni Infantino's buddies in Saudi Arabia a World Cup - likely a January WC in 2034 - but the one beforehand just sounds insane and unworkable.

It happens when an important player is out. Eric Cantona suspension 94/95, missed last 17 Premier league games and lost the title by a point. Roy Keane bad injury in 97/98, missed 29 games and lost title by a point. 

 

That would of given utd 9 titles on the bounce.

Agreed and if spurs are not going to win anything (which is the norm) then I would rather them do it not playing like Conte Spurs..

So England's World Cup qualifying draw features Serbia and Albania, meaning a direct contest between two nations that really dislike one another and famously got a game in Euro 2016 qualifying abandoned over a drone being flown over the stadium.

 

This feels like a bit of a bad idea waiting to happen.

Well, a win for Chelsea tonight reduces Liverpool's lead to two points, even if they've played a game less. Perhaps I was hasty in saying no title race after all. Although certainly Arsenal will be narked that with Liverpool having a stumble at home to Fulham yesterday, they couldn't break down Everton.

 

Also surprised at how fractious it's getting at Wolves. Keeper Jose Sa has not been seen since jumping into the stands to have an argument with a fan during a game against Bournemouth - albeit one where he conceded multiple penalties - then Mario Lemina got stripped of the captaincy for starting a brawl after the final whistle at West Ham last week, and now Ait-Nouri got sent off for his part in a brawl after the loss to Ipswich yesterday, with Cunha likely to get a ban for starting on a member of Ipswich's security. All a bit undignified.

 

Plus, you know, Newcastle thrashed Leicester. How Ruud of us to end Van Nistelrooy's unbeaten start.

And now O’Neil is sacked. I can’t see a scenario where Wolves don’t go down now. It’ll be them and Southampton for certain then a toss up between Ipswich, Palace and Leicester for the last spot I think, though I’d lean towards Ipswich.

I think Everton can easily get pulled back into it.

 

Ipswich have played pretty well all season and are now finding a way to get some wins. I think they're in a decent spot to keep slowly climbing. I'm not sying they'll get out of it, but I kinda fancy them to stay up now.

 

Palace have such a good spine to their team, that I feel they're surely 1 signing away from becoming fine, but they're clearly not atm.
