Curious -

Would a full REM reunion and world tour be considered bigger than Oasis?

British centric forum, live in a bubble etc etc.

I’m biased but would say yes, globally. They wouldn’t do 20 stadium sized performances or whatever it is Oasis is doing in the UK, but across the US/SA/EU/Asia

i got tickets for Michael Shannon's london show purely off the back of that.

not because i expect the band to turn up, but because i love REM and i'm always up for a good cover band and i had absolutely no idea about Shannon's band until this news popped up.

i've only ever seen them twice - once in hammersmith as part of some charity thing that i can barely remember, and then at Glastonbury 2003 which was one of the best nights i EVER had at the festival.

REM popping up with Michael Shannon... vague wisperings of them appearing at a New Jersey festival... could it possibly happen?

Did anyone else here go to the South Africa Freedom Day concert at Trafalgar Square in 2001? Tickets were free (via ballot). Bit of a hodgepodge line up as I recall - the likes of Hugh Masekela, Labi Siffre, Ladysmith Mambazo and also The Corrs, Atomic Kitten and Mel B. PM Tony Blair was booed, Nelson Mandela got a huge ovation, REM headlined but didn’t play for long, and as it was April it was wet and fairly cold.

I saw them 6 times, Hammersmith Palais ‘85 and Newport Centre ‘89 probably my favourites but Glasto ‘99 was very special

I saw that Hammersmith Palais set, and the Liverpool gig a few days earlier. I miss those days, when they’d gather in the middle of the stage to decide what to play next. Best live band ever.

They did two nights at the Palais. On the night I saw them they did covers of Have You Ever Seen the Rain, Radar Love, What’s New Pussycat? and Aerosmith’s Toys in the Attic. Place was full of Paisley Underground types. Great night 👍🏼

I was there, and I wasn't there too. I was physically in the crowd, but I wasn't there mentally speaking. Mentally speaking I talked to my mate (Shaun) all the way through the whole performance.*

* - I didn't have much of an appreciation of music then, and certainly didn't know that talking shite for the whole of their performance would annoy others around me.

Yes, I went to this. If I remember there was a long delay as a bit of the stage gave way or something, so REM had their time cut due to sound curfews. They played maybe Losing My Religion, Imitation of Life and a couple of others I think? We were stood in the sort of front put bit and the stage was built with the Lions at the front of it. I think it's all on Youtube.

Love REM so much. I would have thought they'd do stadiums if they came back, if they wanted to. I know they've been spotted together alot recently etc, but I still can't see it ever fully happening, for a tour.

1999 REM was one of the best gigs still of my life. I got there during Bush and stayed on the front row from then on. Michael Stipe touched my hand. I think that gig is why I am still there every year.

magic stuff.

Touched by Michael Stipe!

I met him once, well, I went to a book signing, and acted like a teenager with a brief Hello exchange (I was about 30!). 🙂
