not sure works like that, they are having to buy energy at high and increasing prices in a global energy market, and in the end are businesses, whereas if they were state owned...

They could decide to not put their prices they control their own prices but they are greedy and want to protect their profits.

Oil is still relatively cheap compared to electricity. If we burnt oil to generate electricity current prices are equivalent to $1000 a barrel.

Natural gas prices used to be more regional as opposed to oil because it could only be transported via pipeline easily. The new LNG tech allows Europe to complete for natural gas which in the past could only be sold to Asian countries.

Ok, but the whole issue is due to Russia and gazprom turning off supplies etc

Plus for us the Tories decided to get rid of a whole lot of our gas reserves too. That seems like a poor idea now.

Fortunately we're less reliant on Russian gas, just have to hope that Norway and France don't limit our supply..

Yes that's forcing Europe to look elsewhere and "bidding up" gas prices on other continents.

That's what Putin is banking on apparently. Europeans becoming so fed up with the cost of living that they force their leaders to hand Ukraine over to him.
