Hi y'all.  Never been up the tor.  As will be driving through the village on the weds mid-dayish  do you think it'd be easy parking wise to nip up there en route for a view?

Edit to add its the festival weds I mean.

I wouldn't fancy that myself, might have chance to hop out and nip up there while you're stuck in traffic.. :P

Went up there a couple of years ago, the Saturday before the festival started. Had a lovely day, picnic with the wife overlooking the site, could see for miles. Think we saw about 20 people all in all coming and going, we were up there a couple of hours. Wonder how busy it'll be next week..

Be aware there is very little parking near the Tor itself....most visitors park in Glastonbury town and then walk....about 5-10 mins tops from town to Chalice Well to join the path up.

Cheers PJ - think I might try that :)

We are going up the Tor Tuesday afternoon this year.  I'd heartily recommend it, although the mornings when the hills are rising from the receding summer mists like islands in a ghostly sea is the best time to get up there.

We are doing this after Stonehenge (if I am still awake!)

It is beautiful up there, well worth a visit. Just be warned the path up is quite steep!

The three of us that went in my car one year went up on the Tuesday en route. We sat there for ages! it is truly lovely.

Don't forget to drink some of the water from the Chalice Well and the other one who's name I forget.... they are both very different tasting waters. Very nice though!

there's a pub close to the entrance with a big car park, sure you will be fine to park there.

Yep....Riflemans Arms.  He opens at 1200 and there is a carpark.....outside hours I think rhe carpark is gated.  If you park there probably best to check it's ok for a couple of hours while you walk the Tor, and then buy a couple of pints from him.....getting clamped would be a baaaaad way to start your festival :o

Otherwise there is a Pay/Display about 250m nearer town...from the Riflemans go straight over at the mini roundabout and its down the next left turn after the traffic calming.....

If you find the direction pointer on top of the tor and you have a pair of binoculars look north east, past the church at West Pennard and on towards Pilton, you will be able to make out the fence as it runs around the top of the site at Lime Kiln/ Hitchin Hill with the Pilton Tithe Barn and Mr Eavis house just to the left of that. On a clear day. Which it will be!

Would love to go there. Has anybody used the shuttle to Glastonbury town from the festival site before?

Website says they depart mostly hourly but can you really rely on the times?

We did in 2008, our first year. I know it was a long time ago but I don't think much has changed. Buses were regular.

Took the shuttle bus in on the Wednesday (possibly Thursday) and made our way up to the Tor.

Wouldn't do it these days mind you as any time inside the fence is precious!

Thanks for the info. I'm always travelling from Germany to the festival (for the fifth time now) and it's always a shame I can't make more time before or after the festival to travel around a bit more, I kinda want to take the chance this year. Maybe thursday morning. Probably won't happen anyways, but you can dream ;)

You can easily see the ( back of) the Pyramid Stage too.

If you have time, have a look around the Chalice Well. It's at the foot of the Tor and is another haven of tranquillity.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
