True but SOAD have subbed and BMTH will be this year ... think they should make good headliners for the "heavy" day

SOAD wont headline next year given they subbed so recently and haven't massively grown since then, as much as I'd love them to. The chances of them headlining Download next year are pretty high tbh and likewise with BMTH. Unless they have a monumentally quick rise in sales BMTH wont return to headline in 2016, but I wouldn't rule them out as headliners in a few years.

Major Lazer playing Ally Pally. Probably gonna be NME headliner themselves, rather than a closing set, aren't they?

Was gonna post this the other day but completely forgot - yeah I think they could headline NME outright now. Personally I don't even see a huge difference in the size of NME headliners and closing set acts, Knife Party and Nero are pretty big, I only really see the purpose of closing sets if it's to avoid a clash between similar bands i.e. Bombay (Nero) and AM.

Doesn't get more similar than Limp Bizkit and Mumford & Sons ;)

I didn't really mention it when people said 'Major Lazer (closing set)' because I thought I was jumping to conclusions in thinking that people class a closing set as less than a headline slot but I think they'd have headlined NME if they played this year. Next year I doubt they'll be around seeing as they're doing a lot of August fests this year.

Yeah man I agree, I think it worked last year, don't really get it this year. It's not like Knife Party are a million miles away from NME headliner (some would argue they are already)!

What about this years closing set the? Don't think Mumfords/Limp have many cross over fans and even Peace would have a lot more crossover Alt-j fans than Mumford fans imo.

Don't overestimate Ally Pally as meaning they have to headline NME, The Wombats are playing it after all

He wasn't saying that Limp Bizkit and Mumford have a similar fan base. His argument was that closing sets make sense when the NME headliner and Main headliner share a similar fanbase, so a closing set is added in order that the two acts don't clash. This years closing set makes little sense because Limp and Mumford don't exactly have an extensive cross over in fanbase, and Knife Party are arguably NME headliners in their own right.

Read my above post, I'm saying I see the only purpose of a closing set to avoid clashes, hence this years is pointless.

I take your point about AP though, but that's just one of a few factors - ML has a couple of songs on repeat on R1 at the moment + it'd be difficult to place an act like ML (who played 3rd on NME in 2013) anywhere other than the top of NME, especially considering R&L have recently avoided another act playing after a huge dance act.

That last point kinda makes me think of another reason of closing sets, perhaps since big dance acts are just more suitable late on? Sure KP could have subbed LB, but I've often felt the later it is the better the atmosphere for big dance acts.

Ahhh I get your drift about closing sets now. Yeah I agree with last part, taking Metallica day for example I know it's really hard to grasp their size but for me Catfish/Twin > Rebel Sound and taking out Rebel Sound those two are exactly the level you'd have expected for an NME headliner/sub. I think in the next few years it's safe to assume NME will close with a dance act more often then not for the reason you've mentioned.

What is the deal with The Vaccines? Why are they playing much lower slots this year than everyone thought?

Personally seem ideal R1 heads to me, maybe with a closing dance act.

p.s this is objective, I think they are an awful, awful band.

This is how I see it... I think in terms of placement, no doubt Limp Bizkit are bigger than Knife Party, but I think as a dance act, the festival would want Knife Party on last.

Had they put Knife Party as headliners and Bizkit at subs, it would have been questioned, so they've used the closing set to avoid that IMO.

Limp Bizkit?

Knife Party?

Well done.

From what I hear, Knife Party are phenomenal live, having seen pendulum in that tent- I can't wait to experience Knife Party Too. Arguably could headline the tent on their own (I know a few of us originally had them down to headline the tent in our predictions)

Limp Bizkit, I understand they're not everyone's cuppa tea- but they're mine and they are decent NME headliners IMO. Their hits and their generally sound will have the entire tent bouncing. Plus Fred Said they're bringing George Michael out for faith...

RTJ- LB- KP is one of the best runs the festival has had, IMO. Gon' be sickkkk.

Compared to the swaying that'll be happening at mainstage Bastille/ Alt-J/ Mumford... The tent will be carnage.

This 1000x. The atmosphere in the dance tent in 2013 for their set was absolutely unreal, easily the best crowd / atmosphere at any act I've ever seen. Their set was fucking brilliant too, would recommend them to anyone.

    • That's the festival apart fay tickets in some form sold out.
    • There’s a few in there which could go either way or I’m not bothered if I miss but think that’s now be pretty set.  Few rubbish clashes like Kasabian/Loyle plus Reytons/Pixies/CMAT but I’ll head with the lads to the most popular one.   (And yes no Byrne or Twigs, just can’t into either)
    • I saw somewhere they were advertising Lewis' day as him live on Glagow Green and only mentioned Amy Mcdonald and CMAT as support, 0 mention of the festival  I completely agree this will probably be the last one which is a shame because the first 2 seemed so promising and now its turned into middle of the road rubbish with acts you can see everywhere else  Anyone know if the BBC are covering it next week as it'll be fascinating to see how full (or empty) it is
    • Did anyone catch Viagra Boys last night? A rollicking good set, with a little more free jazz than I expected.   if you’re up early, Walabi is doing a super job in the Cupra Pulse. There till six.
