dude what your describing is simply nicking someones tent simple as....call it tatting whatever you want, theres no moral ground to find in taking a tent when your not sure if the occupents have gone or not...lets not forget many are worth 40-50 quid these days...not cheap! id be mad as well if someone came and pinched my tent because I happened to want a lazy start to monday to avoid the chaos of the crowds trying to get off site early. if you want to go tatting may I suggest you hang around till much later in the day then youll have your pick....if you go around in the late morning early afternoon 50/50 your flat out stealing not `tatting` as a fair few people probably dont leave till later in the day and may go for last walks around the site etc before they do.

Maybe. We went on a wander on Monday morning/early afternoon last year and I was forever worrying about coming back to an empty patch of grass! Just wondered if there was an 'ettiquette', so to speak!

I tatted last year, i watched our neighbours get up and pack their personal stuff, then about 2 hours later realised they'd gone. It was obvious they weren't coming back from what they had left, so we took a tent, gazebo, about 40 cans and some other bits n bobs. Fikthy feckrrs they were

It's usually very clear - most of the idiots who leave stuff pretty much trash everything on the way out so when you see collapsed tents or completely empty ones swinging in the breeze

the 3 x vis-a-vis 4 man tent+massive gazebo for 3 rich guys who left shitloads just stood empty all monday next to us.

but there's always 'new' people doing it and you never know if a criminal might take it as an opportunity to take a look so it's not a good idea to leave your tent unattended for long if you do go wander

Yeah, I was aware that there would be newbie collateral damage, but to what extent, compared to the re-cycling benefits of shifting more of the discarded items - less landfill etc etc I'm not saying either is the right way, just commenting that it is indeed a predicament.

Given how difficult it is to get tickets in this day and age, I wonder if there might be a way of guaranteeing the availability of your ticket for the following year, subject to you demonstrating that you had acted responsibly with regard to your camping area and rubbish.

Not sure quite how you would police something like that of course

I went to Lowlands in Holland a few years ago and the thing over there seems to be to throw around and spray any food or drink you have left over all around your campsite, cause as much mess as you can basically, and set the odd tent on fire. It was a mess. Bizarre end to a pretty chilled out festival.

Thing is if you keep your little bit of the campsite clear throughout the festival it takes hardly any time at all to clean up after the tents are down.

I'm not saying that everything gets binned around our tents immediately, but usually happens is first person up in the morning put the empty cans etc that may have been dropped the night before into a bin bag. Takes about 2 minutes each morning. I think it took us about 5 minutes at the very most to tidy up after our tents were down last year, and see no reason it'll be any different this year.

As said in earlier posts though, most of the folk this thread is aimed at probably don't post on here.

I've litter picked glastonbury and lots of other festivals and its amazing the stuff thats thrown away, the worst is people destroying their stuff before they leave so no one else can use it . Cutting tents, breaking poles, shitting in tents, setting fire to them .

On a bright note last year wasnt as bad as some other years the clear up was very quick that was partly the weather tho .

Very likely If I'm not doing film work I will litter pick the site again

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous. Surely there must be some sort of guidelines / rules (not that they'd be followed anyway) for tatting. Like, only after a certain time, Tent has to be completely empty etc..

I think there's some overreaction happening here, not always a surprise!

Your tent isn't going to immediately vanish if you leave it for a short wander. If you camp with friends or make friends with neighbours there'll be someone to keep an eye on it for you

I've tatted myself on Monday afternoon, but only from tents that are obviously not occupied (e.g. sleeping stuff gone + no bags/rucksacks + tent door left open etc.). But I've seen some serious pikies also on the tat - I doubt they are as worried about accidentally stealing stuff.

I've posted this suggestion before but I often think that having a few skips around the campsites that are covered/locked up until sunday night (so they don't getfilled before folk leave) may encourage people to at least take their stuff they don't want to a central point. You'll still get some idiots that won't but it may improve it.

The one thing I found frustrating last year was the number of litter pickers I was working with last year that said they were just going to leave their stuff behind.

I reckon designated skip like bins for people to dump any "disposable tents, gazebos, chairs etc" would be a good idea.

Put them in place on the early hours of Monday morning and people wouldnt have to worry about taking there unwanted stuff with them but can easily dispose of them and save time for anyone who needs to clean up.

I think last year was a slight improvement on previous years too.

I don't see how its hard. You bag up your trash and put it in a designated area, then carry the stuff you brought on site with you... you're likely taking less out than you brought in anyway!

The whole process takes me about 5 minutes..
