Yes but if there's one or two of the members working with a team of professional hitmakers, that diminishes that fact somewhat.

It morphed into that but The Beatles were the origins of the Boyband movement which slowly evolved into no instruments when increasing numbers of boybands from the time got exposed for miming their instruments.

Fair enough. Who has written a song doesn't alter my enjoyment of the tune one iota as I don't buy into concepts of musical integrity and authenticity. In fact musical integrity, authenticity and all that carry on make me want to vomit. Too much listening to MBV and other tuneless shite as a youth has turned me totally off 'real music'. Unreal music is much more my thing.

I once saw Girls Aloud at V festival on year in a packed out tent, me and my mates off our heads, now that was a joyful thing, we all loved it apart from the one lad who left after half a song to preserve his "musical integrity" and spent the rest of their set sulking outside the tent.

Somebody mentioned the Sugababes. I'm pretty sure I saw them on the Pyramid at either the 2003 or 2004 festival?

Back to One Direction. As a man in his 30s I have to confess I find That's What Makes You Beautiful a very decent pop tune.

If they were to be announced now though could you imagine the carnage round the perimeter fence as all their fans try to get in?

You have to give credit to 1D, they haven't cocked it up big time like Justin Bieber, or even gone as extreme as Miley Cyrus. They seem like nice lads who are actually decent enough role models for their target audience.

Whether you like their music or not is a different matter. Personally, I couldn't care less. I think I can kind of remember one of their songs that was in the charts, but that's it. I just respect the fact that they're not spitting on their fans etc.

As for Glastonbury, I can't see it
