I detest phones as gigs- for some reason my eyes train in on their bright ligt. Plus the people using them never seem to hold them infront of their own face, but infront of their shoulder thus blocking the view of the person behind them ... and the people that tut when you 'jump' into them so they don't get a straight video... well thats another soap box moment

I thought it would be an issue at Glastonbury last year but it really wasn't - maybe people actually 'get into' the festival instead of trying to record every moment

Talking through the set drives me mad ...... chatter chatter chatter - if you want to have a natter move off and find a bar gggrrrrr

I took a flag last year and proud to have done so. Part of it had YNWA and a huge pink ribbon on it but I will add we were at the rear part of the fields we were in and hope it didn't cause too much hassle.

My other half is a breast cancer survivor so the pink ribbon symbol has very special meaning to us and many people approached us to share their own personal stories about breast cancer and thank us for flying the ribbon often reducing this burly 6'2 hairy arsed fireman to tears. Other half was a first timer too so this added all the more to that good old glastonbury spirit.

Flag will be staying at our tent this year.

The phone thing bugs the hell out of me. Why would you pay and go to a festival just to watch it through a 5 inch screen?

It was cool at Jack White's tour when they asked people not to do it, they even removed people who broke the rules. Jack paid for a professional photographer to follow his tour and put all the pics online for free. Still, there were some who'd rather have amature shots than those.

That's just wonderful - it's all about reaching the point of tears and what better could be imagined for your other half's first time. Must have been full to bursting

I don't know if you know but Michael Eavis lost Jean, his wife to cancer. There's a lake and statue in her memory up by the stone circle - take the upper exit into the Dragon field across the little bridge and it's on your right. I pick a night go and have a silent and usually quite emotional few minutes alone there each festival.

All gig annoyances to me are about the lack of consideration that people show towards others and how self absorbed some people can be. I'm 5 foot 4' and one of my friends that we go to gigs with is 6 foot 4'. Neither of us can help our height but we do try and find a spot in plenty of time at each and every gig we go to. It means that people who are short have plenty of time to choose not to be near him and we usually try and find somewhere that I can see the stage. Added to this my husband is quite claustrophobic so doesn't like being right in among crowds. The amount of times just as an artist arrives on stage or even during it that somebody way taller than me goes in front of me without even offering to let me go in front does slightly irritate particularly when they proceed to talk all the way through an act or film the whole thing or even worse film themselves singing along to it.

At festivals what irritates me most is people who barge past you constantly flitting from act to act. If you want to flit that's fine but be prepared to watch from the back so you don't disturb other people. If you want to talk again: fine but go somewhere where you are not disturbing other people.

As I say with everything it's just about consideration for those around you. People should remember even they are not enjoying an act somebody else might be and you should do your best to not spoil it for them.

I'm starting to get annoyed at the number of shorter people who seem to really think that taller people are obliged to only stand at the back. Or even think asking "can you move over a bit" is some sort of reasonable solution.

Look, it's not my fault I'm tall, OK?

My better half is not the tallest, so I really do sympathise with how hard it can be to try and get a view at what's going on when taller people are blocking your view. Sometimes it even happens to me.

But i've got as much right as anyone else to be at the front of you, and if that's where I'm going to be that's where i'm going to be staying.

And no, I won't move over a bit and relocate your problem to someone else, that's unfair on them and unfair of you. Someone has to suffer the problem and today it's your turn.

Not a fan of phones indoors but not too bothered at festivals as there's usually sufficient room to move to see round them.

Flags though... can do one. 80000 people tried to see The Rolling Stones last year. All but about 5000 probably didn't see them for one second of the entire event. Selfish beyond words.

  • 3 months later...

I used to record bands at glasto onto DAT, using bi-aural mics hidden in sunglasses, a pre amp eq etc...took lots of effort, but sounded stunning. Got some very rare stuff... including lots of ambient shit from the stone circle.

Now i just get really stoned and have a good time ;-)

Even got some audio of laserman at the stone circle... unlike all these phone recordings, the mics were modified to allow for the high sound pressure level, hence no distortion.... underworld 98,was my best recording, apart from the noise from my Zippo now and again ;-)
