I like both older and newer music - I for one would be very happy to see some legends even though they are older (I'm 24), a nice mix of old and new would be ideal.

I have quite a lot of sympathy for the OP here, I've made a similar point several times in the past.

I think a lot of people have been sold the idea thatthese bands are still important or whatever. I disagree. Seeing a band that are not at their peak or simply bloody awful just because they are 'legendary' strikes me as perverse in the extreme. The bands I truly love, the bands that mean an enormous amount to me, I've no desire to see them as fucked up old has-beens incapable of maintaining their art and their myth. It's precisely because I do love them that I don't want to see them. I want to view them as they ere in their pomp or their peak. I'm sort of torn about this one, and ready to concede that 'at their peak' can mean different things, the Stones were certainly magesterial last year.

The point of view I've got absolutely no sympathy with is the 'I was too young/born to late so it's not fair' argument. I don't believe everything should be available for everyone ever. There is beauty in the finite. Like a butterfly it emerges and wallop, a short time later, it's gone. That makes it more precious, and if you don't get to see it, well, that's the way it is, don't moan, see something else that might only exist for a short time.

Finally, I think we're all being sold a bit of a pup by the music industry, the media etc etc. Lgendary is something that few people achieve, it's definitely not equivalent to 'been knocking around for years'. I'm reading Bob Stanely's 'History of Pop' and there's something beautiful about appearing, making a shit hot record, than vanishing.

Dunno, I'd generally like to see less nostalgia in the way stuff is flogged to us, it's a cheap, emotionally manipulative way to get our money.

Incidentally, I watched 'Made of Stone' at the weekend. It confirmed my belief about a lot of this. The Roses, man they were sublime between 88-91 or whatever, but I don't want that tarrnished by watching them now. Relentlessly depressing. Play the music, that album gets played a lot in my house, but see them now? Rather shove my bollocks into a cement mixer. Nothing could can come fo their reunion.

Quality stuff mate. Agree with a lot of it.

The thing about the "big" or "legendary" bands playing now - and this only applies to them if they're still good - is that it reaffirms a life long love and faith for the band. As per The Stones this year. Macca, Bruce, Neiler etc. Its like ". I wasn't wasting my time listening to this lot all those years. They really are great".

But if they're shit and just selling on their past glories? Nah fuck that. You're right.

I enjoyed the Roses last year but couldn't really get into it. Although I like them I wasn't a huge fan growing up. And Brownies vocals. Very offputting. Sadly. To paraphrase Bill Hicks - Like watching quality porn with too much man-ass.

I think there's more fun to be had from suggesting the band's that haven't formed yet.

Personally, I think Eavis should sack himself if he doesn't book Infernal Racquet, a Finnish folk-disco band comprising two sisters who will become famous for hits like "We Got Dinosaur Velcro" and the heart-breaking "I Give You My Last Pickled Herring (and you ate it)" and because Ros of Sight Ros fame is a huge fan, as headliners.

The Cave thread is 10 x the thread the Manics thread will ever be. Plus it's not terrifying at all, it's like a cosy warm blanket.

I think a Tupac hologram played Coachella? Or am I being mad? Maybe I should check.

haha fucking hell you could have put a warning before that!

So long as the old fogey bands keep putting on good sets then I'm all for it.

There wont be many "legends" left in 10 years anyway.

What bands are there now where they are in their 50s, that are going to take the place of the likes of pink floyd/bowie/macca/led zep?

I guess it's bands like the smiths/the cure
