Well, I presume it was true, I only read reports of it happening.

But as it was on transfer deadline day and I read it from multiple sources, it's probably more based in real facts than most footie stories.

His background is hardly one of a Brad Jones/Lindegard/Hilario/mannone type, He is a player who has played for italy. He may start as backup but I have no doubt he will be real competiton for Scezny rather than the previous backups who were never really in with a chance of taking the position on a permanent basis.

Szcezny doesn't need competition, he needs to be the competition. He may be an improvement on Almunia, but he's still one of the worse keepers in the league.

It's sad that I'm not more disappointed. I think his analysis and punditry has got a lot lazier in the last couple of years while before he displayed good insight. Would it be optimistic to hope for someone good as a replacement?

Hansen was the best analyser on any of the football highlights shows for years. Head and shoulders above anyone else, though I agree he's not been on form recently.

Shearer seems to be the main man now. I think we've 20 years of him ahead of us. Hansen is being pushed. Hes on a fortune per episode of MOTD. 45k or something. I really like him. I wonder how many times hes said "pace, aggression, movement off the ball" when describing a good player. Stock phrase stuff.

And yeah, can't see people moving from Sky or ITV to the Beeb. They don't pay as much. Would love to see Keano on MOTD though.

I did like Hansen, really knows his football, but in the last 18 months - 2 years I think he's been a bit lazy. I get the impression he's taken to just watching the highlights packages we're shown rather than slightly more extended sections and preparing his analysis before the show.

I think his performance dropped around the same time as his big pay cut at the beginning of 2012.

Think you're a bit naive on the pay front. If the BBC dropped wages by the amounts you are suggesting they'd end up with Barry Hayles in the analysis seat.

My view is if they put Barry Hayles in the analysis seat, the ratings would stay exactly the same. If their is any evidence to show that ratings significantly decrease when shearer and Hansen are away then I may reconsider, I suspect the analysis would show no significant difference. Football fans would stop watching match of the day if they stopped showing man utd, Liverpool and Arsenal, I don't think they would stop because the pundits changed.

Ultimately it is very difficult to know due to the many other factors that it's difficult to exclude. However, whenever they do these polls on different channels football coverages, the results are usually extremely favourable to the BBC. Some of that may well be due to the lack of adverts, or an unwillingness to pay a satellite subscription, some of it is down to presenters or commentators rather than pundits, but part of it is also the pundits on each show. We've discussed it on here often enough. Hansen or Robbie Earle for example...?

People watching MOTD do it through habit, because they haven't got SKY or the Internet, because that weeks games were particularly exciting or important in terms of the outcome of the league, etc etc. I doubt the most important factor determining whether a person views or not, is the quality of pundit on offer. However, if the BBC has a panel of Hayles and Akinfenwa it loses all credibility. Ratings would fall of that i'm sure.

I think adverts is a huge reason why people would choose BBC over ITV and probably force of habit. I don't think ITV even bother showing international finals anymore. I suspect If you switched BBC and ITV punditry teams ratings wouldn't change at all. Not only do I disagree with your point about Hayles and Akinfenwa, I think BBC could put me (I definitely have a face for radio, don't know about you!) and they would still tune in because they want to watch Ozil, RVP, Aguero etc. On a more realistic note if BBC hired cheaper pundits people may not enjoy them as much as Shearer/Hansen but they would probably do what I do now eg record and fast forward or go online. I can see why a star struck tv person would appoint the likes of Shearer and Hansen on huges salaries as its not their money to spend, I however think when spending taxpayers money we need to be more careful to be sure we are getting value for money.

Amazing (but not surprising) that only 2 of 92 clubs (premier league/football league) have managers who have served more than 5 years. Im particularly surprised that many of these lower league teams can actually afford to pay off managers.
