Encores

Where does everyone stand on encores at Glastonbury, or just encores in general?

To my memory only the stage headliners seem to do encores, which in my book are just a pointless waste of time. "Oh look I'm going to go off the stage, pretend I've left and then come back and play our biggest song" - it's boring and cliched.

I know what you mean... but when bands just play a longer set and then don't bother with all that, it tends to p1ss off the crowd who feel shortchanged! The Cribs, for instance, never did them when they were smaller but they seem to now (as they prob don't have any choice really).

The only proper one I have seen was at Benicassim ages ago when Madness just refused to leave the stage. Suggs was saying he was having too good a time and didn't care how much of his appearance fee he was going to lose. Think they ended up playing about 15 minutes longer than they were allowed.

It can be used to great effect. I cite McCartney in '04. Finished "Hey Jude", took huge bow with the band. Everyone leaves the stage only for Macca to return to play a solo acoustic version of "Yesterday".

Thats stagecraft, baby.

I like the way Springsteen does it these days.

The band come to the front of the stage and take a bow, then they return to their positions and get on with the encore.

The crowd know it's an encore, but there's no waiting around clapping and cheering and wondering whether they are just being prima donnas.

Did find it strange when 1st started going but now think it's a pure waste of time, just tell the crowd it's the last song, make the most of it.

I agree they are a bit silly, but you expect them with headliners now so not getting one feels a bit shortchanged.

QOTSA lack of encore last time just felt brutal, what with it being sunday night and the delightful 'the festival is over now' coming up instead of another song.
