My (male) boss goes to WOMAD.

But that doesn't mean I disagree with you. Far from it.

actually, it much less like that Islington mother's day out since it moved to Wiltshire. I think most of those Islington mothers get a nosebleed that far from London.

But on both sites it's remained the 2nd best festival in the UK. Don't knock it till you've tried it. :)

Considering Stewarding there this year - what stands out as making it earn the 2nd best in UK award by you?

cos it's more about just being there than it is about dashing off to see XYZ band.

Of course, the music is fantastic too, tho those who are firmly fixed to their indie landfill will find it dreadful - which is always an extra attraction. :)

I've really tried with World music - listening to all sorts of roots and ethnic music played on reclaimed/repurposed instruments with varying degrees of technical ability from awful to just quite bad. I've also listened to and enjoyed lots of very well played traditional music from all over Europe and Asia. I even like Gabriel - circa 1980 - and the thought of all those Islington mums (without Islington dads) is very appealing, but I will be giving it a miss again; if my boss likes it I know it's just not for me. It sounds like Art in Action - but with all the nice ceramics replaced with West African music.

I wouldn't worry yourself James. Stick to the indie-landfill, voting tory and Sky TV. You know you're in a happy place there. :)

When I watched that apprentice episode where the little shits were at Womad trying to sell umbrellas and cardboard boxes and other tat, I was a little shocked. I had always imagined womad punters to be much more diverse, but there did seem to be a lot of upper middle class families with the parents trying to cling onto their acid munching left wing oxbridge days. Although I admit that the junior apprentice is not the best way to judge a festival

yep, it's definitely got an overly large quota of the white middle class Guardian-reading PC brigade ... it always reminds me of that French and Saunders sketch where they'd doing hand-painting with their kids in a gleaming white kitchen, and have to keep rushing them to the sink to wash the paint off their kids hands.

But even so, it's still an exceedingly good festival with a very diverse range of superb music, and almost totally dick-head free whilst not being up its own arse.

I'm not sure what "Indie Landfill" is, but I do listen to everything from Acid Mothers Temple to Joe Zawinul and Zappa, Jan Garbarek to Goldie Looking Chain, does that count.

so what you're saying is that you stick tightly to various forms of white rock.

Seems I was even closer than I thought first time. :P

If you think of Garbarek as "white rock" then there isn't much hope of a meaningful discussion. And Acid Mothers Temple aren't white, or rock.

I mean "white rock" as a wide-ranging genre and not a literal term, and those acts very definitely fit within that. Mike Oldfield clones and Zappa clones are very definitely white rock.

The fact that you're not able to realise that they're very VERY firmly "white rock" very definitely gets you right for the first time, with you saying "there isn't much hope of a meaningful discussion".

And the fact that you're not able to musically step outside of white rock to hear anything that's beyond the "just quite bad" which you described as the best world music you've heard says it all.

So I'm right when I say you're musically limited to white rock, and I'm right about the Sky TV. Just one to go... :)

And while you maybe don't vote tory, perhaps you're no less confused about your politics than you are musical diversity? I'd say that a quick summary of your many posts strongly suggests that you (or that you already vote tory).

It had extremely relaxed and easy going atmosphere last year, assuming you have consideration for others that is. Surprisingly the take up for Oxfam steward places last year was very slow so should be fairly easy to get one.

Lovely festival imo,

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
