Mind you, in my opinion they were never better than mediocre in the first place. Siamese Dream is a load of overblown, over produced, middle of the road guff. But that's true of most US college radio rock of the era....

They've played a load of old songs on their recent shows. People just like to complain for the sake of it. I got to hear Starla, Muzzle and Siva on their last tour, so I ain't complaining.

imo if your playing glasto or any other festi really you should do a sort best of or most popular set list .....i mean its not like a band tour promoting a new album is it .ive never knowingly seen the pumkins although i love the band ive just not got to see them so ill be a tad disappointed if they do an only new set list .

Yeah I know, but surely people who go to their shows are too though? I remember a lot of people complaining that they didn't play "Today" or "1979" on their last tour. They'll obivously play them at Glastonbury though...

I am, by the way, perfectly willing to accept that this is a generational thing. I think Smashing Pumpkins are overblown, pompous and dull. I dont like Nirvana either - who never did anything other than recycle their influences. The whole "grunge" was pretty vacuous and did nothing for me.

But I'm in the wrong half of my 40s. My wife, who is 10 years younger than me and grew up with this stuff, loves Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins. Me, I'd rather listen to the Gang of Four and Flux of Pink Indians

Fair play, I respect your opinion. I'm not much of a prog fan (in fact I pretty much despise the genre) and some of their songs that are a bit overblown tend to annoy me, but the great thing about them is that they are willing to mix up their sounds, rather than just release the same album over and over again to sell albums and be radio friendly. I don't think they were totally inset on being Rush, they also had a few Cure moments too. When I think of MOR, I think new KOL and Coldplay.

I see your point. Not really into 'grunge' either tbh (though I wouldn't call Pumpkins grunge personally, I see it as more of a Northwestern scene). It was too similar to the 80s underground, which I find vastly superior. I found those 80s bands much later on though, due to being early twenties.

Yeah I meant at Glasto rather than their own shows. For the casual fan who was aware of them back in the day but hasn't kept on top of what they've done in the last 15 years it's going to be preferable that they play a Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie heavy set.

The US music which I did get in the 90s was either lo-fi - Sebadoh, Trumans Water, that sort of thing - or noise - Jesus Lizard, for example (best live band ever....)

Yeah, they pretty much play a greatest hits set at a festival, though subbing the Other Stage, I can't see them playing for longer than an hour.

Expect Today, 1979, Ava Adore, Zero, Tonight Tonight, Cherub Rock, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, and a couple of Oceania then maybe a Mayonaise or something.
