Came to thread to find out likely hood of Roger Waters playing,.. stayed for inane argument about covers vs. original.

Everyone should know THIS is the greatest cover/version of all time :

Also non-famous people doing fantastic covers :

Yep, I agree. There are loads of covers that sound better than the originals. But it's much easier to take someone elses idea and perfect it, than to have the idea in the first place. Wouldnt you agree?

What do you mean by 'sound better'? What I'm curious about is how you arrive at which version you prefer to listen to. I think you're over-analysing. Even if you think the hardest part, or the most important part is coming up with the idea in the first place (which to a large extent, I agree with), do you have to know who wrote a song to work out how much you like it?

As I asked before, if you hear 2 versions of the same song, and one of them is by the writer, but you don't know which is which, do you need to know which one is the original in order for you to decide which one you prefer?

No, in your test I would prefer whichever one my ears tell me.

Who wrote it and who performed it makes no difference to the enjoyment of the song, of course.

I have never said I dont like covers, I love them! but I would always have more respect for the original.

People in this thread seem to disregard the original versions as irrelevant things as soon as a more pleasant version comes along. I just think thats a pretty shabby outlook

Rubbish....

I am a musician/singer. I'm not a naturally gifted writer, but I want to express myself through my musical abilities

Said many many aspiring musicians

every musician or singer who never wrote a tune should feel innadequate?

yes, you have to resort to playing covers because of your limitations in composing your own pieces

Kind of proves that the true talent is in the initial composing.

and which version of How Many More Times is going to be remembered? Led Zeppelin's or Howlin' Wolfs?

which version of Twist & Shout will be remembered? The Beatles or The Isley Brothers? even though neither of them wrote it

I reckon the beatles wont be primarily be remembered for twist and shout....Their covers were great, a bit of fun, but the serious stuff is all the rest

Cos he mimes in bits

Would this be easier with more words - it's more valid when it's the writer performing, but a different performer can still get it and produce a better sounding version

Elton John must do your noodle. Someone else writes the words, he writes the music and performs it - how does that fit in to the scale?
