2013 Lineup

Biffy won't headline R&L in 2013, I can't see it. They aren't even headlining off the back of a new album by then, another set of arena dates and only two scotland shows this year a festival on their own turf we'll say. Let alone a festival with 7 arena dates at least in the uk yet to have sold out.

Weezer could, soundgarden could, blink 182 are releasing, rob zombie with stage show, faith no more are still around, pixies could feasibly, smashing pumpkins if available. There are a load of options better than bloc party like a saw thumb.

On the point of it not mattering who plays second top, I think that's silly, the headliner wants the sub to whip the crown up into a frenzy so that they are ready for their set, if there is little cross over then it probably has less chance of happening as people would probably leave to see something similar.

If they were a sub in 2003 following their most successful album, why, after 2 mediocre albums, a short hiatus, a completed comeback with the (smaller) UK fest they headlined not selling out, would they get bumped up?

They'd be an incredibly strong sub, but they'll be less popular than the likes of Screaming Flo, and - assuming Sabbath are a headliner - wouldn't be another headliner alongside them.

I would love most of those bands to sub but really can't see any of them doing it... Weezer aren't big enough.. Soundgarden would be too like Download and a top two like that would be very odd for Reading... Blink are a headlining band hence why they headlined last time they played... Rob Zombie wouldnt fit and arguably not big enough with the Reading crowd... FNM unfortunately had a tiny crowd at NME... don't see them getting a sub size crowd at Reading and plus it really wouldnt fit the festival... Pixies could be a shout but is there any plans for them touring next year? I think we will have to wait for them to do a new album (if Kim agrees) before they do an extensive tour again... Really doubt Billy Corgan would accept the drop down... wouild be incredible if he did..

The only heavy bands I can think of to sub Sabbath are Biffy and Placebo... Biffy like I said I see headlining at some point in the short future (if they dont do it soon I doubt they ever will) and Placebo I think are big enough but why would they get boosted up from playing third on their last tour... although to be fair they do seem to get bumped up or dropped down for little reason.. their popularity has been pretty consistent imo.. System of a Down aren't going to sub the fest like loads of people reckon. They are a headline band now.

Yeah but as said many times before of FNM they were announced after the festival had already sold out and after their download appearance, plus they were up against arguably the most popular band in Europe at the time in kings of Leon, that year at R&L didn't have any heavier type acts top 3 of the bill, it was pretty obvious they wouldn't pull much of a crowd.

Not much has been made of the effect of The Killers headlining TITP. The damage is probably either:

  • Rihanna headlines T and V. Mumfords headline T and R+L.

  • Mumfords headline T and V. Biffy sub T and headline R+L.

  • Mumfords headline T and V. The Prodigy play R1/NME stage at T, headline R+L.

  • Sharing headliners doesn't happen in 2013.

Pick one!

If System of a Down were playing shows in 2013, wouldn't we know by now? They're pretty huge worldwide, much bigger than in the UK, and they'd probably like to get to those places. It's a bit delusional to think that they'll be announced for R+L out of nowhere.

Plus, Serj has his own stuff that he's working on and is probably much more likely than SOAD.

Well as far as being another headliner alongside Sabbath I agree... If Sabbath play I dont see SOAD playing.

As far as them not getting bumped up I just don't see why they would play if they were to sub. Their last tour was all festival headline slots... before that in 05 they were headlining fests all over Europe... they are a proven headline band now... It's not like they need to play Reading or even tour... they also have headline options when they do come back... I'm sure Soni would have them headline and it's probably not that long till they will be in consideration for headlining Download again since it seems quite happy to have repeat headliners.

Edit: Plus there is always the option of their own tour.

Look at rage against the machine. Not a headline sized band pre hiatus. Post hiatus headlining sized band in both of their comebacks 2008 and 2010.

SOAD significantly added to their back catalogue with mesmerize and hypnotize, songs such as BYOB, radio/video, attack, kill rock and roll and lonely day all popular from those albums.

They didn't get the chance to headline R&L first time round, they wernt really big enough pre hypnotize and mesmerize, they split for hiatus not long after their very successful download appearance. They came back from hiatus and download got them again, they headlined all if the festivals they played that year in Europe. They've only made 1 uk appearance since there split in 2006 and only 12 in Europe, that's 12 chances in 7 years in Europe or 1 chance I the uk.

If system of a down were to come back and play there is only one spot they would do and that is top if the bill, they would almost certainly be offered top of the bill across european festivals and I'm sure R&L would see that as an opportunity to get them top of their bill.

I think the Rage/SOAD argument is pretty redundant - they are headline bands at the right festival, but at the moment R&L isn't that festival, and they won't play unless they headline, therefore they won't play R&L.

RATM in 2010 weren't an exciting book. RATM now wouldn't be a headliner at R+L, because they've done nothing since their hiatus. And RATM had a longer hiatus, and a larger amount of reunion hype.

SOAD have had their comeback, and to headline R+L rather than a fest with a more suited demographic, they'd need a new and successful album. Their popularity right now is that of a sub.

    • First time for me, really enjoyed it. Nice venue, nice weather, good vibes, etc.   Notes on performances: CMAT's a great performer - seen her live twice now.  GANS are my favourite new act since Big Special, and live they're fantastic. Fellow Brummies too, so I'm all about that. The album's a bit disappointing though. Primal Scream were great, although I felt the crowd seemed a bit muted. The Libertines sounded knackered. Not sure they're suited to a festival. First time seeing The Royston Club, thought they were very good - the tent seemed to be full of kids on each others shoulders singing along. I'm all about that. First time seeing the K's, a bit disappointed. Didn't like his voice, and I felt like every song sounded the same as the last one. Sarajevo is a good tune, though. It still sounds like all the others, just a bit better.  The Maccabees and Two Door Cinema club were a but underwhelming, but Pelican by the Maccabees is a banger. It all sounded a bit Travis/Early Coldplay to me though. The Wombats took me by surprise - I expected 1 1/2 hours of 'Let's Dance to Joy Division' style indie-landfill, so I was surprised to hear that some of the rest of their stuff had dynamics and range. I still don't think they're any good, but I can't say they didn't surprise me either. Just not my thing.   Surprise of the weekend for me was Rizzle Kicks. Never listened to them before, but they got me out of my tent and into the arena as I was trying to nurse a hangover and I thought it was a blast.    Will probably go next year too.
    • Not really anything to say other than the fact I'm down at Opeth and this has been a cracking summer by and large here. Few duds, plenty of sellouts, strong weather, and the craft beer is cheaper than the regular bar. Winner winner, chicken dinner!
    • Pink Floyd night on sky arts time for me  to wallow in nostalgia and remember some incredible gigs
