I would say there are things they could do rather than cutting child benefit which would make a much bigger difference...

But overall... there is a reason I wasn't kicking off about losing child benefit... I won't fight to keep it.... But I won't be unhappy its staying either... There are far worse issues we need to address than helping people with children...

Its down to each local authority / LEA / School if they provide school age children with it or not...

Its part of a child's education... And unlike other sports, which are provided in every school by law, this one has the added benefit that it could save their lives...

So to me it is a priority in my child's education. And it could be viewed as a life or death thing... We have a canal close by....

But this doesn't give it any less or more precedent than disable peoples benefits. These things are not mutually exclusive. t suppose it depends how you see these things.

Which is of no relevance to any of this. The fact is that they ARE rich, and being rich gives them choices which aren't available to the poor.

You make choices through life...

exactly - such as the choice to spend far more on a house then is necessary for your needs.

That can be followed thru from with the choice that because you're rich you should get hand outs from the govt, or the choice that others are far more deserving of those handout instead.

If the child benefit thing gets reversed that yhou're in the position of choice. You've said that the disabled are more deserving ... so can I safely presume that you'll be giving that hand out to the more deserving disabled or will you instead pocket it and enjoy it yourself?

The disabled/cancer thing is in reference to the House Of Lords rule breaking i assume - any idea what's happening with that? Who do you call to police an abuse of parliament by government?

Dave Moron has indicated that he's going to find a way to push thru the cuts for the disabled and cancer sufferers.

And at about the same time he's indicated that he wants to find a way to reverse the similarly announced cuts to child benefit for high earners.

He's such a nice chap.

I don't think Cameron is leading his party very well at all. How many u-turns have we had ? and there seems to be a mini battle happening behind the scene on this...

My guess is the savings won't result in disable people getting more... Despite the links being made by Neil...

I doubt it will either - but it would have been reprehensible to be cutting benefits from those most in need of them while reversing a planned cut in benefits for those least in need of them.

So all in all, this u-turn of a u-turn is a good thing because those in the higher tax bracket are as a groupl the least deserving group to be recieving benefits - and it would have been at the expense of something else more worthy of them.

Not everyone is entitled to child tax credits... I don't get them...

They're means tested - which gets to show that you've not really any need* for child benefit either.

(* presuming you're not right against the cut-off point).

I read some of the comments earlier on one of the beeb's stories someone linked to from here, and there were quite a lot of people saying that child benefit should be abolished completely and added into tax credits for the working and other means tested benefits for those not working, which in principle sounds a great idea.

Unfortunately lots of people won't subject themselves to means testing, or simply don't realise that they're entitled to claim benefits - and so lots of people wouldn't recieve the money as they do with the universal child benefit, to the detrement of the children who are meant to benefit from the current CB.

And in the opposite direction, if all the people who are entitled were to claim what they're entitled to, then the benefit bill would be higher than it is before cutting people out of the current CB arrangements - which is counter to the reduction in spending that the govt is aiming at.

Ultimately, none of the above (aside from the first line, perhaps) is any part of the problems. The problems really arise because too many people are earning an unlivable income because too many are being paid too much. There's no tax or benefit measures that can address this, it can only be addressed by a change in attitude towards wages as a whole.

from what I read in the original proposal, child benefit is being rolled into the upcoming universal benefit which higher rate tax payers won't qualify for. I can't see how this would be rolled back.. even if it was it would only be for 2 or 3 years unless there are fundamental changes ahead

There was a documentary about how the government spends it's money on the BBC not so long ago and they posed the question to people on the street "Should all pensioners get the winter fuel allowance?" obviously most people said yes. They then held up a picture of Peter Stringfellow and asked what about this guy? Then Richard Branson... The reaction was mostly, "Oh no, they shouldn't get it".... Which would result in means testing of the Winter Fuel Allowance.

They have to put the barrier somewhere and I'm guessing in terms of he child benefit thing it's much less likely that you'll have both parents earning over £40k.
