I was just making the point that cretins, drunks and junkies and those with irresponsible politics - racist, neo-Nazi etc would be barred from office and not eligible to stand and the standards need to be quite strictly enforced for executive or ministerial office.

Not saying your MP can't have a drink now and then and still get on the ballot box because a member of parliament is more a representative job rather than an executive job and if the MP's voters are mostly drunks maybe a drunk is an appropriate representative?

Why would you elect someone who you think knows nothing about the job?

I presume you would vote for the candidate who you thought did know something about the job?

I would.

But as well voting for someone who knew something about the job, voters would vote for someone who they thought would treat them fairly and not abuse his or her power in office to treat the people like slaves or as animals.

When the problem is judges and police officers knowing something about the job and nevertheless using their power to abuse citizens, deny them their freedom when they were not doing anything wrong then that problem can be successfully addressed by allowing the voters to pick who is in charge.

Rubbish. There are plenty of IQ tests that have nothing to do with quack psychiatry. None of the psychiatrists' drugs or ECT or brain operations will get the "patient" (victim) a higher score on an IQ test. All their so-called "treatments" impose brain damage, lower intelligence and make the victim less healthy as a result. Psychiatry is an industry of death.

The whole idea of intelligence being measurable by an IQ test is one that's been cooked up by the mind quacks. Either you approve of the mind quacks or you don't.

I didn't say "teetotal". I said "drunk". If you habitually drink to the point of impaired judgement - as in you could not legally drive - then you are not someone who can be relied on to be on call for emergency service.

Most presidents can manage to stay sober I would imagine. If not, impeach them.

As a democrat, I oppose dictatorship. I support people having their say. The president's main job is to make sure that people are allowed to have their say. That's what presiding is all about. That's practically a job description.

Neil's right about IQ tests - even psychologists accept they only measure a range of skills - mainly the aptitude for completing IQ tests. It's dangerous to assume there's an objective test to measure a subjective and value-ridden trait like intelligence. The most you can do is measure aptitude for a particular skill set that's culturally associated with intelligence.

While Uncle Liam could have phrased himself more tactfully, I agree that the local kids might be targetting you because they know they can wind you up, and giving them an alarm to set off is a mistake.

You have to treat kids with respect,and try not to be confrontational.

Our local kids used to open my gate and let our dog loose, so i went up to them one day, and said, 'have you seen my dog? I'm really worried about her, she keeps getting out and she's too old to look after herself. Will you keep an eye out, and if you see her trying to get out, will you shut the gate for me?'

They looked shamefaced and never let her out again.

What do you think they'd have done if I'd gone in there ranting at them?
